Hey! i’m a new guinea pig owner and i was just wondering why does my guinea pig only eat the seeds out of his food? he won’t eat the pellets but he eats hay and vegetables as normal! i’m not sure why he’s doing this but i would like to know if this is normal:roll:

Hi, piggies shouldn't be given seeds! I'm assuming you have a museli mix? Seeds are not a natural part of a piggies diet, and often with museli they will only pick out their favourite bits, and not the healthy bits! You'd be much better off switching to a full pellet mix like Burgess or Harrington's for example, as museli just isn't the best food for a piggy, and often contains unhealthy bits and lots of sugar!

I agree .Guinea pigs often tend to eat the bits they like and leave the bits they don't. Pellets should all look and taste the same to prevent selective feeding. I use Twitch Guinea pig pellets by Wagg. Also you need to get ones with added vitamin c

Hi and welcome!

Please do not feed dry food/muesli mixes. They lead to selective and unhealthy feeding. Seeds are too fatty and should not be part of a balanced guinea pig diet. Guinea pigs are junk food addicts as much as humans and generally make a beeline for any fatty or sweet parts in a mix while you end up throwing away the uneaten or soiled rest. Even if pellets may be more expensive, they won't cost you a lot more because you can feed less as all gets eaten; the current recommendation is a lot less than you would expect in order to encourage your guinea pigs to eat as much hay, hay and more hay as they can. The same goes for a carefully balanced mix of veg - less but balanced is more!

Please take the time to read these guide links here. You will find them very informative and helpful. A good diet can really help you avoid some preventable illnesses, make sure your guinea pigs are as fit and healthy as possible and live longer.

Apart from companionship (guinea pigs are group animals that are not wired to live on their own) and plenty of space (guinea pigs are a ground roaming species), diet is the third life enhancing and prolonging pillar of wellbeing and and guinea welfare that really makes a huge and tangible difference to the quality of life of your guinea pigs.

Here is our UK pellet chart: Nugget Comparison Chart
If you can afford it, opt for timothy based ones. they are the healthiest as they are hay and not grain (more fat) or legume (alfalfa) based.

Can you please tell us which country you are living? We have members and enquiries from all over the world, so brands and what is available varies massively!
