i feed my piggies gertie but i throw most of it away what is the best food for them as they just pick at this one

Selective feeding is a common problem with muesli/mixes. A plain pellet is ideal - the most popular and highest quality UK ones include:

- Oxbow Cavy Cuisine
- Science Selective Guinea Pig
- Burgess Excel Tasty Nuggets
- Wagg Optimum
- Pets at Home Nuggets

See if you can get sample packs of each one and see which your piggies enjoy most. Oxbow Cavy Cuisine is nutritionally the best you can buy, though it is expensive. Science Selective and Burgess are the most popular, while Wagg Optimum and Pets at Home have a similar nutritional makeup to Burgess.

thank you

I'm still learning haha so glad i found this site i have been searching about the food but everyone has different opinions, my piggies squeak everytime they hear me ive been told its because they are hungry but i dont even know if you can over feed a piggie but i will try and get some samples of the foods you have suggested thanks again

Piggies are rather opportune little creatures - they know how to make you think they need feeding, even just as they've finished eating! The right balance of food is thought to be around:

- 75-80% hay
- 15-20% fresh fruit and veggies
- 5% dry food

As long as they are eating their hay well and they get at least one handful of fresh veggies a day, their diet is usually fair. Often spreading the feeding of fresh fruit and veg over two meals a day works best. The dried food tends to just "round off" the diet and provide any nutrients that might have been missed in the hay and fresh foods.
Don't overfeed dried food, it can lead to unnecessary weight gain in adult pigs; around a handful per pig each day is plenty, you can top up later in the day if you wish to, but don't fill the bowl to the top and let them pig out on it; their hay is far more important!

So if they keep wheeking at you and pestering you to feed them, just top up their hay. My favourite trick is to give them a different type of hay than they're usually fed, as that really satisfies the little monkies and makes them think they are being given special treats!

I was having the same problem with Gerty and I changed to Tesco's own brand, they seem to eat far more of this than the Gerty :(|)

Mine did exactly the same. They're now on PAH nuggets, which they love.

If mine are wheeking for more food, I normally go and pick them some grass from the garden (unless it's dry and warm enough for them to be in their run), they think mummy is giving them a really special treat! rolleyes

I agree with CCC4, they do try and make out that they've never ever been fed!

I could have filled their dried food bowl, filled their hay rack and given them a bowl of vegetables.......but if I still russle a bag or open the fridge door just after doing that, mine still wheek like I haven't fed them in weeks.

lol yeah mine go mad when they hear the fridge door open and you would think they were being starved to death haha ive changed there food now ive put them on burgess and they love it no wasted food at last all i have to do now is try and get them to stop being so nervous they are only 10 weeks old ive managed to stroke torres but gerrard runs and hides when i go in oh the joy but I'm learning aswell thanks to all of you on here
