Hello,

I've just been checking our piggies feet and one of our girls, Karou, has a flap of skin on her front left paw, the same colour as her foot, which I'm assuming is a spur? We've never had piggies with spurs before, so I'm not sure.

She also has a couple of brown bits hanging off her front right paw, which is pink, and a bald patch of her 'ankle'. Are these also spurs?

I'm really worried about my little baby. :( Any advice much appreciated. Thank you.

Sorry to post again on my own thread, but I posted the photo on a Guinean pig page on Facebook and they all said they were spurs. I'm really hesitant to clip them back though, as recommended online. I've used some Perfect Paws ointment in the hope of softening them instead - has anyone else tried this successfully? She really doesn't like me examining her feet - she doesn't mind them being touched; she's not in pain, she's just a little madam and finds the whole teeth/feet/ears inspection process very undignified I think! So I don't think clipping them would be very successful, as she wiggles so much and I'd hate to snip the wrong bit!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi sorry you haven't had a reply. Yes I agree they look like spurs, I would leave them unless they start to catch on bedding etc and if so they can then be clipped or you could ask your vet to do it if you are unsure. I haven't used the ointment myself.

Thanks Helen. They don't seem to be causing her any problems at all, but I'll keep an eye on them. She's such a little character. She really hates me checking her. Fortunately the others don't seem to mind (although her sister really hates having her nails clipped!). We adopted a piggy from Little Pip's Rescue recently who we have to check every day as she has previously had problems with her feet, and she doesn't mind at all! We use the Perfect Paws ointment on her feet every few days so I thought I'd give it a go on Rou and see if it makes her more comfy. It won't makes things worse anyway. Not that she likes having to sit still for it! ;)
