Hi, so Forrest and Esme are currently living side by side with mesh separating them. Forrest isn’t yet neutered. They’re currently indoors, Forrest in his homemade, open top cage which is about 6x2ft and Esme is in the cage that she came in which is only a ferplast 100. My plan was to extend Forrest’s cage so it’s 50% bigger for them both to live in. However, Esme is VERY active and giddy! The complete opposite of Forrest in this way
She hops on and off her wooden house like a little dog, where as Forrest won’t even attempt to climb a ramp or climb onto or over anything! She also does a lot of popcorning, which obviously she’s a bit short on space for at the moment! But I’m worried that the open top cage isn’t going to contain her! So... I’m thinking of moving them into the shed (it prob would have happened at some point anyway) so they’d be able to have a large enclosure with an insulated hutch as a warm bed area, they’ll have loads of space and she’ll be safe as I can build the walls higher! Just realised it’s a very long winded way of asking if I’m better waiting until Forrest is neutered and ‘safe’ then put them both in the shed together for the first time as it will be a neutral area (I did this with my rabbits and it worked well) Or would it be ok to move them to the shed with a mesh divider and then remove the divider when Forrest is ‘safe’? They seem to get on well, Esme seems to love Forrest and looks for him, watches him and bites the bars to try and get to him! Forrest is a bit indifferent but there is no teeth chattering or anything, just lots of happy squeaking and he’s comfortable eating next to her, so I’m wondering if this is enough to consider them ‘getting on’ or is it going to be a completely different kettle of fish when they can actual make physical contact?!
The problem is I’m not sure when I can afford to get Forrest neutered now, it may be another month or so and then obviously a 6 week wait after that so I’m just feeling that I don’t want Esme to be stuck in the tiny cage for the next 3 months
I also don’t want to spend money on extra cages, or extending Forrest’s cage if I could just put them straight into the shed.
Sorry this has turned out so long! Thank you if you’ve read this far and even more thanks if you can offer advice
