I mentioned a possible fund raiser project last year which has now started. The project is called "Guinea Pig Capers" and will be a tabletop pen and paper role playing game where you can take on the role of a Guinea Pig and experience adventures, quests etc.

I am at the stage where I am seeking potential writers for adventures and also potential playtesters.

The plan is that any profits from the game after costs are donated to Cavy Rescues. The rulebook will also include a section on responsible pet owning and cavy care (others may want to contribute to this).

Let me know if you are interested.

Sounds good. Any idea what sort of setting you are thinking of? Ever heard of Bunnies and Burrows? Both me and the other half are gamers and are are part of the gaming group at Heriot Watt uni so we could both help with writing and have access to many playtesters.

I have been gaming since 1979 with AD&D and played the original Bunnies and burrows when it first came out from FGU. I have been around the industry for a "while" etc, and have credits on 12 published RPG books. I havent decided on a setting yet but see no reason why we cant have many settings, fighting the slavery under the Inca's, persuading the spanish invaders of how cute they are and becoming pets, modern spy thrillers like G-Force ......

I am interested in possibly writing a script for the game. It is after all going to go to a good cause :)

I am posting here the basic game mechanic for the game along with the characteristics that will be used. Any and all input is welcomed. I am already making use of input from "Pound Shilling & Pig" who will receive credit in the final copy.

Characteristics

Your Guinea Pig Player Character (PC) has a number of characteristics that describe him/her in a physical sense. These characteristics are as follows:

Strength: This describes how much stuff the PC can move by lifting with his head or shoving.
Resilience: The ability of the PC to resist damage and disease
Speed: How quickly the PC can move and how many actions it can do in a turn
Cuteness: The natural appeal and personality of the PC
Savy: How intelligent and crafty the PC is.

Each Guinea Pig character has a pool of 15 dice (d6 or standard 6 sided dice) to put against its characteristics. They can be placed however you like but each characteristic must have at least 1 die and a maximum of 5 die allotted to it.

Game Mechanic

When attempting to achieve something a situation check must be made. This is made by creating a pool of dice by adding the dice from the related characteristic to the dice for a related skill or talent.

This pool of dice is rolled, with 4’s and 5’s being successes and 2’s and 3’s being failures. A roll of 1 is considered a “Rumble†and a 6 is considered a “Wheekâ€.
The number of failures is deducted from the successes to find a final task score. This is compared to the difficulty of the situation undertaken. If the task score is equal to or higher than the difficulty then the situation is resolved in the characters favour.

A “Rumble†is an occurrence beyond the characters control is a sign of nature. This could be anything from the urge to urinate, drop a poop or even the urge to eat a poop. The number of “Rumbles†is there to give the Gamemaster some guidance on what the natural urge should be.
A “Wheek†should be considered a success as well as a natural urge beyond the characters control but in the characters favour. This could be a minor popcorn, a major dance (which could give bonus dice to the next characters action) or some other event. This is under the Gamemasters discretion but some guidance is given in the Gamemasters section.

Obviously any feedback on talents or skills that would be appropriate is appreciated.

I had an idea for four characters Cora a smooth coated creamself female. Buster a male tri-colour Aby. Diamond an albino female. Oscar a grey Rex male.
That for one quests maybe the guinea pigs could travel through a series of back yards with obsicles that need each of the single traits to suceed through them.
I don't know, sorry.

Thats a good starting point, but why are they going through the yards, what talents do they have (any you think of can be included in the game). Are they looking to rescue a mistreated piggy, are they searching for a bush of the Great Moldavian floral parsley, whose flavours outshine ordinary supermarket varieties.

Well I was thinking that in one of the yards that there was a hutch that has a beaten up lock on it that can be broken by the character and they can rescue the piggie/s inside the hutch. Within the yards there are obsticles such as rocks (maybe a pond), wildlife, longgrass(Rest stops) and clothing off washing lines And the over all goal is that they take the rescued piggies back to the rescue centre intime for adoption day.
I didn't want to come up with the whole story so others could get involved.

I wouldn't mind helping coming up with ideas, I do know a little about script writing though haven't done much gaming (leave that to my little brothers!).

Have you got any ideas for graphics? If not yet then I think I will offer on behalf of my younger brother! He does some lovely guinea pig drawings with a cutesy look. To get any idea of his drawings and my writing you can look here: http://hutchagoodlife.wordpress.com/piggy-stories/captured-in-cavyaira/

Please PM me if you are interested, I'd love to help raise money for rescues.

Cool I would have loved to see original Bunnies and Burrows I have only ever had the Gurps version. The game is looking interesting so far. Now picturing guinea pigs in a fantasy setting lol.

Are you basing skills around stats such as strength? Can I suggest push, mouth and carry, sideways head strike and leg kick as strength skills?

I can ask for ideas on Sunday when our gaming group meets. (All aged gamers). They know my piggies well, you have to wheek for a coffee in my house!

Hehe love it - these are going in. I am going to have to get your real names for the credits.

We'd be happy to play test. Will try and think of some scenarios too. Loving sound of it so far.

Ok, I asked the gamers. This is four people who have kept piggies, seven of us altogether, youngest is 32, all have played role playing games for many many years so a lot of experience between us. We came up with the following - sorry if it's repeating stuff or not of any use -

Resilience skills; bounce, eat anything, survive on empty stomach, tough

Speed skills; jump, go first, zoomie, skid turn

Savvy skills; know plant, track, sense predator, listen, find plant

Cuteness skills; sound off, song, the look, rumblestrutt, chuckle

All these skills can be gained with experience, they each add one d6 to the pool of that statistic. Eg 'chuckle' would add one d6 to the 'cuteness' pool of dice when you were trying an action that was helped by a good chuckle.

Any guinea pig can gain these skills, but there are special classes of piggy who look after the herd in piggydom. They might need more of certain skills, eg protectors might need strength and speed skills. Or healers might need savvy skills. But all these skills are open to all, all piggies can learn to really 'sound off' if they want to! All skills can be taken more than once too, they just then add another d6 to the pool.

We envisioned a herd of piggies served by small groups of wanderers around their territory, keeping them safe, finding medical plants and so on. So you would start your piggy character as a youngling, starting out and finding their feet, gaining a skill every time you managed to do something useful for your herd. Maybe your job would be to find a wandering baby piggy, or perhaps find some mint for a tummyache, track the passage of a cat and make sure it didn't come near the herd area (rather tricky that one), or maybe talk to a nearby herd to ask if you could have some help with a problem birth from their healers. The herd may move during the year to better grazing grounds, or perhaps you have invested in planting good crops and the herd needs to stop and defend it's territory. But this would be in the kingdom of piggy, we didn't think you could play a prey animal as top of the heap in anything but a fantasy setting, limiting the predators and problems.

(I have to say we also thought it would be fun to not talk at all, simply have the normal range of noises and movements available, but I think you would need to be experienced gamers to get away with that one!)

I do hope this has helped. If you want me to write up some of the small adventures then just ask. I'm pretty sure you can think of a structure for the herd, also more small side plots for adventures. It was rather fun thinking up the skills!

this sounds fab! more than happy to test it out for you when it is complete! i go on mat leave shortly so i will have plenty of time o give it a proper test. this sounds great, hope you manage to get it completed :)

Sorry Sarah haven't had chance to reply earlier, damned client needed a vat return doing. Most if not all the suggestions are going in. I can imagine a large number of players who will respond in wheeks etc. the next step would be to get LARPers playing in Guinea Pig Onesies.

Can just imagine this! Love it might even get me interested in live action.

While drinking I now have this image of LARPers in their onesies (like the Potteries new mascot Pottypig) wandering in some wood wheeking loudly and can you just imagine the rumblestrutting........
