Hi everyone.
I'm thinking of fostering guinea pigs and I have got some questions.
1) should I foster or not?
2) where to foster from?
3) what should I purchase?
4) do you recommend it?
5) what will I need to do?

just so you know I'm going to get a c&c if I do foster

thanks:ple::nod:

Your profile doesn't state where you are from, so things might be different where you are.

I have a friend who fosters for a local rescue and the RSPCA.

The rescue are very specific with what they want so will tell you the type of cage you will need, what food to get, who covers the medical expenses etc. They will probably want to know how experienced your are with piggies too.

I would recommend asking a local rescue your questions, then you'll be able to work out if fostering is for you, and whether they would be willing to use you as a foster.

It's wonderful that you would like to foster piggies, but I'm not sure that rescues will allow you to do so because of your age.
I'm also very sorry but the minimum age for a forum member is 13 years so I'm afraid that our admin team will have to close your account for you. Please do come back when you are old enough to sign up again.

I'm not sure what the regulations are in your country but if you were where I am then 10 would be far too young to foster piggies. BUT... if you would still like to help out then perhaps get in touch with some rescues near you and offer to help with the general care in the rescues base such as helping with cleaning out/feeding the many animals on the weekend.
All rescues also happily take donations so if you wanted to save up some money from doing chores to donate to helping them care for all the piggies they need to rehome I am sure they would happily accept your efforts.

I can't speak for all rescues but for my local rescues the foster homes get provided with pellets, hay and bedding if needed (foster person supplies their own cages and there is not specific cage style preferred but it has to meet certain size and safety requirements.) There is also a limit on how many you can foster at one time based on the cages you are using.
Vet fees are covered by the rescue but only if you use their designated vet and you are responsible for transporting the animal there and back.
All potential foster homes must go through a home check and a discussion about piggy care and experience to be sure the person knows how to cater properly for the needs. This includes experience in trimming nails (and hair on the longer haired breeds).
But as I said, there IS an age requirement. All foster parents are adults but as I said before that does not mean you can't help in other ways.
