Noticed a few small spots of red in guinea pigs urine. A few a couple of days ago, nothing for a few days then a lot today... as a result, checked on him a few hours later and found a small bloody stone. What do I do? I’m confused as I’m reading it’s good cos he’s got rid of it but maybe there’s more? He’s not squeaking while peeing.

Hi! It is good that he is passing a small stone. if they are small enough, they can pass without too much trouble.

Please have him vet checked during regular opening hours with a scan or x-ray to make sure that there are no more stones or sludge stuck up there.

Please have a read of our diet tips for urinary tract problem piggies and ask your vet about cystease, which is a cat food supplement that supports the natural glucosamine coat of the bladder walls, which may have been a bit stressed by the stone. Your vet may prescribe an antibiotic. The diet recommendations will hopfully help towards preventing the formation of more stones.

A vet check for certain! Hope it was the only one and he has no further problems!

Boy, I bet that was painful for him. I agree that a vet check is a good idea.

Update. A bit more blood after the stone but then nothing at all. Peeing and pooping normally, eating, drinking and popcorning fine! Took him to vet. They didn’t X-ray him but they felt his belly thoroughly, checked his bits and bum and weighed him. He also took a look at the stone. Freddie is on antibiotics for 5 days, twice a day. The vet couldn’t feel anything untoward and believes he has got past the worst. Keeping an eye on him. If anything strange I will take him back but for now he seems fine.... if somewhat upset with me for the vet trip!
