Hello everyone, very worried about my Guinea and not sure to book vets or not need some advice. Went to go get on guineas yesterday for some cuddle time. And they seemed fine, but i went closer and noticed one of them (Luige) had a cloudy blue eye. Then noticed there was hay sticking out of it, 1o minutes of research later realized we had to gently wash they hay out with warm water. So we done that, then we had some more cuddle time and then put them and his brother away. Went back out to do my daily check on them today and noticed his eye was still cloudy blue and now has a small spot in the corner. Want to book a vet but reluctant because of covid, but of course its serious i wont hesitate. Just wondering if i should book a vet or should we just treat it at home. Thanks x Love Beth and Luige (The guinea)

Your piggy needs to see a vet. When a piggy gets haypoke it can cause ulceration in the eye. a vet will need to check using dye in the eye and is likely to prescribe antibiotics and pain relief. It’s a very common injury in piggies given they are low to the ground and need a lot of hay but eyes are classed as emergencies, and given you noticed this yesterday, it would be best to get him seen today by an out of hours vet.

We won’t ever recommend home treatment for any medical condition. Seeing a vet is the only course of action as it is the only way to get a definitive diagnosis and correct prescribed treatment.

I have had to take my boy to the vet for hay poke twice during lockdown it's never convenient but it needs to be done. They will probably make you stay in the car and just take your piggie in so they can have a good look

Just to let you know, eyes are treated the same way no matter the animal. So you can get your boy seen by a general vet and not necessarily an exotic one.
