Gulp :...

Currently avoiding all threads to do with lumps to stop my paranoia!

I've just found a lump on Sir Finley's tummy and one on Mabel near her pelvis...they are small but feel quite hard :(

How common are cysts in piggies? Vet appointment will be made tomorrow.

I can sympathise with you - have just taken in daughters best friends 2 boys as she has not been looking after them , after well over a year of saying to the parents if she isnt looking after them / isnt interested I will happily try and re-home them, only to be told will you take them - great - and by the way one has a lump on its side!
my truffles has a fatty lump on her belly - but this little boar has quite a large hard lump on his side - after taking him to the vets on Monday night vet said defo not a fatty lump - so took a sample with a needle - no white fluid came out so not a cyst - says lymph noads / glands dont seem enlarged - lump is attatched to a muscle - sent slides off to cytology and will know results in a week - charged £17.50 for consultation £11.20 for taking samples and £57 external lab fees - so £85 all in all which i thought was pretty good - hope your guys will bve o.k - its nit nice having to play the waiting game xx

:( I know! I couldn't believe it when I had already found one on Mabel and then found one on Finley as well! They weren't there last week...I always get them all out daily and check them over.

They're only 2 years old, I really hope it's nothing to worry out. They feel too hard for fatty lumps IMO but then i'm not a vet! Just going on lumps that i've found on my other pets in the past.

How infuriating that those boys were treated like that! Will be keeping my fingers crossed for them and will give you an update when I've seen the vet! That price doesn't seem too bad seeing as they're doing lab tests.

Oh no, not Sir Finlay and mini Mabel! How strange that they've both developed them at about the same time. I hope that means it is nothing serious. Will have to keep an eye on this thread as I suppose it will be a while before you get a diagnosis if lab tests have to be done. I'll be on pins and needles with you!

Oh no, hope everything goes ok at vets tomorrow and they turn out to be harmless. All fingers and paws crossed for Sir Finley and my favourite Tiger pig. Love and hugs to you x x

cysts and other lumps are quite common in piggies but the good news is that the majority of time they are harmless. ... not that stops us fearing the worst. good luck at the vets tomorrow, keeping fingers and piggy toes crossed for you. x

Thanks everyone for the well wishes, we couldn't get an appointment today but we have one for tomorrow at 1 o'clock. We will of course let everyone know how we get on :)

Oh no and both of them too! Last month I took Shereen to the vet for a lump and it was just fatty. She has quite a few and they are fine so I am hoping it will be the same for your little ones. Good luck.

Lots of love, try not to worry- I know this is easier said than done x x

I just wanted to say that a few years back my lovey old piggy Sydney had a few fatty lumps growing here and there. I think I counted around 6! He lived to be a ripe old age and they didn't grow really big. Never knew what they were. But they didn't seem to affect him. Sending lots of healing vibes and al, fingers and paws crossed here for you xx

So we're back...

I don't feel like I know any more than I did before I went mallethead the vet didn't seem too worried, he had a feel around the lumps and measured them and advised me to monitor. If they get any bigger then to go back...:{

I also need an antibacterial shampoo, can anyone recommend one? I have GG Manuka and neem...is this antibac? Not for the lumps by the way but for Finleys skin...

There are several good shampoos that are antibac - Sporal D (though I think it's sold under a diff name now), Vet Sect, Hibiscrub can also be used as a shampoo.

HTH

Thank you Suzy will invest in one of these, how often do you think I should bath him? The vet said no more than monthly so as not to dry out his skin but i'm not sure I entirely think he is cavy savy...

What do you think in terms of the advice given re the lumps? Do you think he should have sent a sample? This is the second vet i've tried and i'm really struggling to find a good one. I'd rather find a good one now whilst the pigs are well...

my 2 boys had an infection when i picked them up. and one had these on him & he burst it & it really did stink!.. they was already booked in for an appointment with the vets but next day it had gone but he was left with a massive hole! :/ vet said it was nothing to worrie about.but after a week he got another one! & that popped. so i cleaned it up everyday. & it went after a while & so hes not had one since :)

why do they get them?

Sheila my old girl has a cyst on her back which we had checked out - advised to leave alone unless it gets bigger (it hasn't :...)
Maybe contact Chrissy at GG for advice for Sir Finley's shampers, didn't realise it was ok to use Hibiscrub on piggies. Wonder if it's ok to use as a general shamper ?...love the stuff, smells delish :))
Hope all is well with Mabel and Sir Finley love, know how much your piggies mean to you so you're not paranoid at all x>>
Keep us posted x

The vet not being worried has got to be a good sign. It sounds like normal fatty lumps to me. Phew!

Oh no! Glad they haven't come back, sounds like it was an abscess. They can sometimes get them from infected bit wounds but the vet was also telling me that they can get them from the oil/grease glands that they have...

Thanks Trace! I love the smell of hibiscrub too :)) glad Sheila's cyst hasn't developed, hopefully this will be the case with Fin and Mabel!

Phew indeed, lets hope they don't grow!

Sorry, only just managed to catch up on thread. It is good news the vet wasn't over concerned.
It ay be worth to just ringing round all vets in a radius to you and ask if there are any with a particular interest in guineas. That's how we managed to find ours while after someone who could do conscious dentals... We found Rosie on about the 12th phone call.
Love to mini Mabel and Sir Finley x

No problem! That's a good idea, I'll give it a go. I'm happy to ask questions to check them out, dentals often tell you a lot if like you said they do them conscious...

It's odd as you would think living in London that there would be some great vets but they seem quite limited and me not having a car also limits where we can access :(

ps, there is a thread somewhere with new pigtures of the gang x

To be honest, we went through 4 differents vets before we found one, that we are happy with, our 3rd vet was good but didn't know much when it came to pigs. I would think it is hard in London, because travel must be a pain at times.

* wanders off to find pigtures :)) *

Try the RVC - they should have a small animal hospital I'd imagine

It's actually not that far away :) do you have any idea how it works? Do I need to register them like a normal vets? I didn't realise you could take your pets there, just thought it was a uni mallethead
