Babies

A few questions...

Can I put them out on the grass?

Can I handle them without upsetting mum?

Two of them have curly fur...could they become long haired pigs?
I took her in pregnant via rescue so no idea on Dad but two are agouti looking and two are crested/smooth haired like Mum ?

:)

Babies

Can you see that two have wavy fur and the other two don't?

Can an expert predict what I've got?

How old are they?

You can handle them right from day 1 and sex them too, if they're big enough. Don't worry if not, it becomes clearer later on!

I don't put tiny babies on grass, when they are a few weeks old I let them go out for 10 mins with their mum or other babies but no longer. Grass can be quite rich for their little tummies.

You can have some curly and some straight in the same litter, yes

pics? :)

Sorry, just seen pics! Yes the wavy ones look like Rex or if they get longer then texel or merino- looks like merino as the dark brown one has a crest on his head!

I am glad that everything has gone well! you can have different breeds and completley different colours in the same litter. Your babies look very sweet!

You can handle the babies carefully and weigh them from day one. Best do so when mummy is busy stuffing her face to get the milk bar going. Make sure that mummy gets some nice fresh greens and veg and plenty of hay to that effect. Please check whether her milk bar is working after a day. The babies should weigh 70-100 ideally and will start putting on weight in a couple of days if all goes right. ideally, you want to give mummy alfalfa hay (for extra calcium) during nursing as well as keep up the high vitamin C intake. After that, plenty of pellets for the first 6 months will do the trick.

I wouldn't put out young pups on the lawn straightaway and never without supervision or for very long at first.

Here is a link to sexing pups at different ages. You need to separate any boy babies at three weeks old in order to avoid accidents. The earliest documented pregnancy between boys and girls from the same litter is 24 days. http://www.cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm

Have fun watching your littl'uns grow!

Let them spend lots of time with mum, too, though. Handle them for a maximum of five minutes at a time. Babies and mum can become distressed if seperated for a long time.
As mum is shorthaired I doubt that you would have longhaired babies, they could become 'semi' long haired though.

Thanks for your comments and advice. I never thought of weighing them, what a good idea to ensure they thrive.

I'll have a go at sexing them too...thanks for the link, very helpful :)
