fox/cat proofing cage

as weather gets nice and the decorating starts in full swing. i think its about time the boys get a bit of fresh air.

they are currently housed in a pets at home poppy hutch, however want any advise on fox proofing the cage.

When I lived with my parents, where they lived were quite a few foxes and my piggy lived outside. What we did was:
1) We put extra wire mesh over the exsiting wire on the day area door, but we bought the sort that is tough, and hard and you cant bend by hand.
2) We also put extra strong wood over the wood that was already in the cage, used to divide the sleeping area and day area, as we found that ours was very thin and flimsy and we also made the hole for them to get to the sleeping area just big enough for the GP to get into.
3) We also changed the latches on the cage door (you know the bits used to keep the cage shut) as ours were made of wood and could easily be chewed off. So we put the slide across bolt locks (the sort some people use on indoor doors to stop kids getting into certain rooms and what not).
4) We also bolted the cage to the wall so that foxes couldnt tip the cage over to look for weak spots

My piggy never had a problem.

You can also make your garden isn't especially attractive to foxes.

Make sure if you have meat scraps/chicken carcasses/meat tins/cat or dog food in the rubbish etc, that you double bag it and put it in a secure wheelie bin.

Make the access to your garden difficult, or at least make a fox think twice - if it thinks it will struggle to make a hasty exit if caught/seen by humans, it will be disinclined to come in in the first place.

thanks for the advice, with the cat in the house it is becoming harder to get the boys out for floor time, so have decided to put them outside.

I'm gonna get a cover for the hutch, and hubby is going to put four latches on the doors so two on each and board the insides and the sleeping compartments. going to bolt it to the fencing post so hopefully should be enough.

just hope boysw ill be ok outside, but they will **** prefer it as they will be just outside out kitchen door so will see more of us.
