I can't be certain, but I may have just heard Frankie crying when having a wee. I was cleaning out their cage and I heard what sounded like a faint cry coming from inside the pigloo. I lifted it out and Frankie was sitting there. It may not have been a cry as Frankie and Marley are both such noisy pigs and they constantly chatter and squeak to themselves all day.

Well panic stations immediately kicked in, and Frankie is currently sat in an empty carrier on his own while I wait for nature to take its course so I can check for any signs of pink wee. He's had two slices of cucumber and has been in there for half an hour but he's being stubborn and is refusing to wee! Marley, on the otherhand, is popcorning away at having the cage to himself!

They will never wee when you want them too, syringe lots of water, this usually works for me.

I hope it was not a cry and he is fine. Fingers crossed.

x

So far we've had 8 poos, but no wee! mallethead

He didn't make a sound when pooing, so I suppose that's positive. I've attached a water bottle to the carrier and he's tucking in so hopefully it won't be too much longer...

Piggies are generally not very cooperative when to comes to peeing on command! Please be aware that in the very early stages of UTI, not every pee necessarily contains blood (that even goes for bloody looking pees).

Make sure that he has plenty of water and some dandelion (which is mildly diuretic).

Have your boys been on the lawn lately?

Thanks Wiebke. No, it's still a bit chilly here so none of the boys have been outside yet.

He's now getting a little agitated and trying to gnaw his way out of the carrier, so I think I'll put him back in the cage and keep an eye on him there. They're bedded on brown vetbed, so it's difficult to tell the colour of their wee. I think I'll line their cage with white towels for the time being

Poor Frankie :(

I normally do what Chloe suggests, syringe them some water. It does normally speed up the process. When you don't want wee you get a lap full, when you do they make you wait for it...... pesky little things.

Hoping it wasn't a cry, piggies seem to be plagued by bladder problems :(

Spring with its variable temperatures is usually UTI season... we always tend to get a spate at this time of the year!

Just keep an eye on him; hopefully, it was a false alarm.

How is Frankie? x

He's as bonkers as usual! :))

I don't think I've heard any more cries, but it really is so difficult to tell. Frankie and Marley are utterly inseparable when they're in the cage, and out of it. They follow each other everywhere so it's near impossible to tell who is making what noise! I'm popping in and out of the piggy room regularly to check for any signs of him being hunched over or uncomfortable, and I'll be keeping a close eye on him x

That is a relief! It's nice to know they have such a close bond! x

Well Frankie is off to the vet this morning, but not because of squeaky wees - it's a suspected URI! mallethead

Two days ago I noticed him sneezing a lot. This is not usually surprising for Frankie as he is incredibly sensitive to new smells, dust, different hay etc. The slightest change and he'll start sneezing! He has had several check-ups about this in the past, but the vet has always listened to his chest and said that he sounds completely healthy. He is bedded on vetbed which really helps, but he still has an oversensitive nose!

Well recently he has been sneezing an awful lot. I've also noticed a few times that his nose has been a bit runny too and he keeps rubbing it as if it's bothering him. Apart from that he is absolutely fine in himself. He doesn't seem to have any of the other classic URI symptoms, so if it is an infection I'm hoping that we've caught it early.

It may be nothing, and he's just being his usual sneezy self, but I thought it was best to get it checked out. Fingers crossed.

I have had several sneezy, sniffly piggies with congested noses (the usual suspects with the sensitive noses) in the last week or two - no other symptoms. I think that it is probably due to a high concentration of spring pollen that has been released all at once this year due to the long winter delay.

But it is certainly worth making sure!

Poor Frankie, hope you can get him sorted. Always pays to get these things checked out x

Back from the vet after a very thorough check-up. She located the cause of Jerry's frequent sneezes/sniffles - his nasal passages aren't formed properly and instead of being straight are both curved. When he's breathing in dust from the hay, and the air in general, it's getting trapped behind the 'bend' in the passageways. It is only by sneezing that he can clear this. So that certainly explains a lot!

This morning his left nostril in particular is very red and inflammed which she thinks is indicative of 'something going on'. It's tricky to tell whether he currently has a URI, as she thinks we may have caught it before it has developed into an infection, or whether it is a mild URI. I'm so glad that I took him, as the vet thinks it would only have got worse if left untreated.

So we've got a 2 week course of Baytril and a daily dose of Metacam to help with the inflammation. It's a high dose of Baytril (0.94ml a day) which can either be given once, or split into two. I think I'd rather give him a twice daily dose as he hasn't had Baytril before so I don't know how well he will tolerate it. I'm ordering some probiotics at this very moment!

Wiebke, it's interesting about your sniffly pigs being particularly sniffly at the moment. A sort of guinea pig hayfever, I suppose. Perhaps Frankie has also been suffering from the increased pollen which has triggered this current episode.

Glad you have found out what is causing it. Sounds liek a good vet you have there. I too would spilit the baytril dose, we have done with Treacy before as it is much better on their tums and give the probiotic at different times too.
Lots of healing vibes to him, keep us updated x x
