I am the teacher who wrote in two weeks ago! Happy to say Pancakes the guinea pig, survived the weekend with very little water and food! I was not able to get into building until 6 am Monday morning. I was prepared for the worst, however Pancakes began drinking water as soon as I arrived and seemed to bounce right back! He has been getting lots of extra attention from our family and has been vacationing at our home since the weekend. He will go back to school this week, but will be coming home with us every weekend! P.s. I now have every custodian's phone number in my phone in case of guinea pig emergency!
As far as those of you who don't think guinea pigs should be class pets, I'll have you know Pancakes loves the attention he gets from the class. He squeals when the students get back from lunch because he knows he is going to get carrots and lettuce treats, and he gives love to children who otherwise wouldnT have the opportunity to have a pet. There are so many benefits to both the guinea pig and the kids that I can't begin to list! Have a great day and pancakes thanks you all for your concern!

I am happy that Pancakes is safe and well and that you will be taking him home at the weekends from now on.

Unfortunately there will always be the argument of whether animals are good or not good as being class pets.

The only thing I would like to ask though is would you consider getting him a male guinea pig friend so he has one of his own kind for company?

Thanks for the update, I was really fearing the worst. It's surprising how small animals can survive a few days on hardly nothing but I wouldn't want to try it. Give Pancakes a big hug for me.

Thank you for the update, am very relieved he was ok.

glad to hear pancakes is doing well. definately consider getting him a same-sex friend. while it's great that he gets a lot of attention from your students, it can't compare to having another guinea pig to live with; and you might even see a more dramatic display of his great personality! guinea pigs are heard animals, and are happiest when living together. also good to hear he comes home with you over the weekends, and i personally don't see a problem with a "Class Pet," so long as he is being treated gently by the students, gets enough attention, and isn't neglected. happy he was ok!

Glad to hear the little guy was okay.

I'm so glad that he was OK - and that he is coming home with you at the weekends now. I agree there is nothing wrong with "class pets" my son's class have tortoises! and fish - and they are very well cared for and its a great treat to be the child chosen to feed the pets that day.

The only thing is as others say, he will be so much happer (and more interesting for your class) with a friend!

x

I am really relieved to here all is well. It must have been a worrying time for you. But as you say you now have a contact should this situation ever happen again. :)
