So Freddie is being an absolute hero after losing his brother and I have to say he is probably looking after me better than I am him... esp last night when he sat on my lap for hours and wouldn't take his eyes off me and especially when I started crying and he climbed up and rested his face on my cheek and purred in my ear.

However there's one place Freddie becomes very distressed. Whenever I try and pop him in the hutch he stands in the same place for hours on end and won't move till I take him out.

Freddie and Marmalade spent most their time in the hutch but also I don't know what happened in the hutch on Wednesday when Freddie had to watch Marmalade presumably in discomfort considering how much blood there was everywhere. I've found the blood intensely distressing so I can't imagine how it's effected Freddie. But he's very disturbed in the hutch.

Advice welcome x

Is there any way you could keep him inside in a cage instead of in the hutch?

Thanks for your reply... keeping Freddie in the house cage most of the time at the moment. He's also very happy in the run too. Would be willing to buy him a new hutch too. Maybe I'm rushing him and expect too much too soon. X

It may be a bit soon. Suppose we don't know how their minds work. Could it smell funny?

Yes I wondered that. I've given the whole thing a good scrub out. I think something that happened in the hutch Weds has traumatised Freddieccause his mood totally changes as soon as I put him in and take him out.

I think maybe it is too soon. Perhaps he'll never want to be back in that hutch... Poor little thing x

Poor lad :( I definitely agree with a good scrub, perhaps with vinager or bi-card to remove the smell?

Oh poor little Freddie. I would have him indoors and sell the hutch. Is that possible?

I used a small pet safe cleaner but perhaps it wasn't strong enough. I'll try again with what you suggest. Thanks x

Yeah, cleaners and disinfectant don't usually get rid of deep smells, but vinager and bi-card will do. (PLEASE DONT MIX VINAGER AND BICARB TOGETHER, use one or the other with water). xx

'Technically' he's not meant to be indoors so I need an outdoor option at least for when the estate agents do an inspection. But quite like the idea of him being in the fresh air in his own space especially in summer... but perhaps THIS hutch will have to go x

One good thing... he really likes having the teddy bear I bought him nearby. He sleeps next to it with his head resting on the teddy's arm.

I would never have known to buy him that if it wasn't for you guys... so thank you everyone for that!

Aww that is nice. Are you going to take him boar dating?

I'm prob being a bit stupid but I don't really know what that means? Haha. Silly me.

I have been thinking about maybe finding him a friend. Maybe a rescue piggy. But at the moment I just can't bare the thought of replacing Marmalade. I'm really shocked by how much grief I feel!

x

Boar dating is were you take your little one to a rescue for him to choose his own friend. They will introduce him to a boar until he finds one he is compatible with. This saves getting a piggy he does not like and not being able to put them together.

I can totally understand how you feel. You have only just lost marmalade.

Oh wow... that's good! Do you know how you go about finding a rescue centre where you can do this?

I really think you might have to replace the outdoor hutch. Piggies have excellent memories and Freddie would remember whatever it was that happened to Marmalade. Also blood is very hard to remove so he may still be smelling that which would be distressing to any animal. Do you know why or how Marmalade died? I'm wondering why there was blood.

He had a tumour in his tummy which up until Wednesday he'd shown no sign of having. But the vet said it had grown to a size where by Weds he couldn't go to the toilet so was pushing and pushing and simply breaking blood vessels.

Even writing this I'm crying my eyes out and I just saw the aftermath. Freddie had to watch it happening!

Will this pain ever lessen...

I'm so sorry to hear about Marmalade :( Blood is very hard to remove and that hutch brings back bad memories for Freddie, Buying another hutch is the best option... As for now rearange things and wash the hutch out with vinigar and water. Having things look different and smell different will help a bit. And like others said Piggy dating is a great idea :) This will be good to ensure that Freddie will like his new friend :) Sorry you had to go through this :(

Rest In Peace Little One
