This past 2 days there have been guinea pigs, hamsters and rats on my local freecycles.. it blooming annoys me!
Just enquired about 2 boars.. doubt i would be able to keep them, but this is what was said.. and concerned anyone could take them, at least i know places that would be a good home :(
".......I have two male guinnea pigs needs homing. My son has lost interest in them and they are lovely little things. They were used to being handled but as i said he hasnt bothered for a long time........."
why freecycle for animals when there are dedicated sites!

Hi Mystori, I think people advertise on freecycle as they dont know where else to advertise or possibly they dont want to take them to a rescue place because they are too skint/or too tight to give a donation (or even worse they dont look after them properly and they are not in a healthy condition/are in need of vetinary care), or they dont want to be 'judged' by rescue places (please no one be offended by this)! But there are also a lot of people out there who go out a buy pets from the pet shop without really thinking about it first and when it gets too much just try and find the quickest way to 'get rid'.

My two piggies were on a freecycle site, they are enjoying a happy retirement now with me in a big hutch with a big run (and daily roaming in the garden bushes). I felt I had to pick them up because they had been advertised twice and I had this awful feeling that if I didnt get them then who knows what would have happened to them. When I went round she said her daughter was allergic to them but she had got 2 rabbits now - I only got them from the front door she didnt invite me round to the back. She also told me that there was originally 3 brothers but one of them had died. The piggies were in good condition but have grown a lot fatter since Ive had them (courtesy of Lidl's fruit n veg bargains and local farm shop).

Now if I see an ad for piggies I email a link to this site with a polite and friendly message in the hope they will come and have a look and advertise for a rehome on here (hope this is ok), because at least the piggies will get a good home, whereas on freecycle its a bit like a lucky dip as to what kind of home they go to.

All our pets are unwanted/rescue and I have a feeling it will continue that way! Some of the rescue piggies on this site are sooooo cute! its a good job I only have a little garden at the moment.....

I know its frustrating but I dont know what is worse, someone offering to freecycle their guinea pigs or leaving them in a small hutch/cage with no attention for years?

I think the responsibility for most of these unwanted pets lies with the pet stores that just sell them, without really advising them properly of the time, expense and attention that all animials need to different degrees, also I'm sure if these people saw my vets receipts (and took into account the regular stuff you have to buy for pets like my cats flea and worm treatments) they would think properly about it! Even the fish arent cheap - aquasafe water treatment costs 8.95 a bottle!

oops sorry, I'm a bit of a chatterbox.

I do completely agree! and i also post the links on here lol
What concerns me about freecycle, and not so much say animal rehome, preloved etc, is that you would probably be looking at getting that animal to come across the advert, wheras freecycle, someone may get them on a whim, thinking "oooh guinea pigs, free.. lets get them"
Also, the sad fact that people do have snakes that need feeding :( (ps i love snakes just not their love of guinea pigs)
Well, i have heard nothing back.. if they are taken i hope they get lots of love and support as it worried me they havent been getting any handling x
oh and ps.. i so get you on the fish too! mine cost me a bomb for the treatments etc..

I'd rather not see any animals offered 'free to a good home' and have to say that any I've collected that are FTGH have usually been in need of help and I've seldom been asked any questions as to where they will be living or if I have had guineas before, etc. Mostly people just want rid of them.

Unfortunately it's quite hard to find good homes at the moment and people are getting rid of animals rather than taking them on.

I rescued my last two from the freecycle. The lady said on the ad she would need time to decide who to give them to. I emailed her and 2 minutes later received a reply asking if could pick them up that night. I found out she was getting rid as she wanted a baby and she wouldnt have the time for them. After collecting them they are by far the most skittish piggies ive ever seen and try to hurt themselves to get away from you and have obviously had no time spent with them.
There coming round now and doing great but its just a shame that people dont care. I wasnt asked any questions at all about who i was or where they would be kept etc. I dont think animals should be allowed to be advertised on the freecycle myself x

I can understand yes that people will try to get guinea pigs on freecycle on a whim just because they are free and the poor piggies could end up in another home and be unwanted again, and agree that all unwanted pets should be rehomed via a proper rescue, as home visits are made and only suitable homes found.

I just think that people use freecycle as they obviously dont want to use rescue for some reason - everyone has heard of the rspca etc and it would be sooooo easy to find a rescue centre - there are so many (and more people must know about the rspca than freecycle)! I wonder really if it might be a bit of a guilt thing deep down - somewhere deep deep down they know its wrong to buy an animal on impulse then get rid of it just because the novelty has worn off?

I know freecycle is not the right way to rehome (and none of my pets have ever been freecycled or rehomed as once they are mine they are mine for life) but I am glad I picked up my two little fellas off there as at least 2 piggies are safe and well looked after (even though I'm more experienced with rabbits which we used to have when i was younger - thats why Ive been loitering on the forum for tips etc)! I just hope I dont see the lady advertise in a couple of years with the 2 rabbits she bought.....

Yes, i agree with that!
To be fair, round here there are only 2 rescues that have in or take guinea pigs, and one is very hard to get from, but that is no excuse.
Just wish there were some laws, then again do not get me started cos i feel there should be laws for having children too!
I am glad you got yours, and they are now in a forever home
Unfortunately it looks as though more may come up, since my local freecycle has started to allow this.
Then again I'm a sucker for looking on other sites.. do not know why i do this to myself.. want to "save" them all, but not at all practical :(
Just hope people start to think twice, especially with the economy how it is x

Hey mstori. Which freecycle group are you a member of ?

I own a dedicated animal rehoming site called Animal Rehoming UK. I created it to take the animals away from the freecycle and cheapcycle sites. I'd be interested to know which site you are a memebr of and I will see if they are willing to re-consider advertising animals.

My site link is

http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/Animal_Rehoming_UK/

I am a member of that site, which is what annoyed me that the details were not passed on to you. Did not realise you owned the site though.

I will pm you now x
