Hi everyone,

Today I bought some Simple Reward Strawberry Treats for my guinea pig, but he hates them 🀣.

I checked the ingredients while I was getting them and they are literally just freeze dried strawberries, no sugar added. I thought it would be a fun occasional treat to help reinforce the idea of coming to me when prompted. He’s already really good at coming, but I thought he’d might like a little bit of strawberry (that wouldn’t be as messy for me to clean up after he’s gone to town on it πŸ˜‚).

He won’t even humor me and put it in his mouth, he hates them. Is there any other use for these treats? I’d rather not waste them if there was way to find another use or make it so it tastes better to him.

I’ve included an image of the ingredient and information incase that gives anyone any ideas!

Thanks!

I think any veg that is not fresh . Can HARM piggies. Frozen is a defo NO.
Pls read the food info that's on here.
Lucky no harm done.
My Piggies love grapes not many just one every few days. Love um

His favorite food is banana. Are there any similar lower sugar fruits that he might enjoy like that. He’s really hit or miss and I want to try and give him some variety, and make sure he’s not loading up with sugars. He does like kale as well.

Freeze drying fruit concentrates the sugars and makes them worse than fresh fruit.

fruit should only ever be a very occasional treat so a little is Fine to give during such a hand feeding bonding time But the healthier thing to use with him is herbs (just watch the quantities of higher calcium content, parsley and dill are higher in calcium, and if you’re going to hand feed higher calcium herbs, then don’t give other higher calcium veg that week).

Mine love the occasional blueberry, definitely the first thing they eat. And parsley. Also partial to the odd cherry tomato (though I do take the seeds and liquid out to minimise the chance of them getting a sore mouth.

Have you tried some herbs, our boys love coriander and basil as a treat, they also love banana & strawberries but they don’t get them too often!

I buy those Oxbow treats with mostly veggie ingredients, but they get them once a week or maybe even less.
My Finn and Lara do get plenty of fresh veggies and occasional fruits.

I introduce them with variety of fruits and veggies, because I feel they will get all the nutrition from variety.

Fruits I have tried with varying degrees of success...

Plum (πŸ‘πŸ»)
Blueberries (πŸ‘πŸ» From Finn, πŸ‘ŽπŸ» From Oggie)
Peach (πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»)
Strawberries (πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»)
Apple (πŸ‘πŸ»)
Raspberries (πŸ‘πŸ»)
Grapes (Usually πŸ‘πŸ», but recently πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ)
Blackberries (Which I got scratched picking for them πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»πŸ‘ŽπŸ»)
Cherries (πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»)
Pear (πŸ‘πŸ»)

Obviously fruit is something they only get occasionally, but it’s always fun seeing what they do and don’t like.

Is not frozen it’s freeze dried it’s just dehydrated fruit

I think fruit and veg has to be in its natural state for piggies. I occasionally give mine a strawberry top with a tiny bit of strawberry flesh still on it. Any more and if think it might be too high sugar.

This thread is quite old now, but yes @Black piggies is correct. Fresh fruit should only be a very occasional treat due to the sugars but freeze dried fruit is even worse as the process concentrates the sugars making them even more unhealthy
