I read somewere that you can put your hay in the freezer over night and get it out the next day making sure it goes back to room temperature, doing this kills all mites and lice it would be really good if this worked has anyone tried it or herd of it just think a mite free world for our piggies ::)

ive heard that, dont think my mum would be so keen on that though! lol

I have heard to put bedding in the microwave but I have never tried it, lol!

Not nessecarily! Vets do get things wrong sometimes!

I have no idea if this is safe. I'd like to find out though!

I would microwave hay, but don't think I would freeze it...don't fancy having it next to all the food etc ::)

Me too! Although my vet is very good I've never heard of anyone freezing hay and I can't find any info about it on any other forums.
I'll keep looking though!

I wouldn't do it, you're introducing water/damp/condensation to the hay. Do you know what temp your freezer reaches and do you know temp parasites die at? Do they die or just 'hibernate' for a certain length of time then come back? How long does it need to be frozen for? Just some of the things I would want to be convinced about before I even considered it. If I get a bad lot of hay I chuck it, that way I know I don't have a problem.

My lot eat so much they would need several freezers full and it would mean defrosting some daily and making sure it was room temp and not damp- too much like hard work for me ::)

Karen (who likes the easy life ;) )

I have put a small bag in the freezer at the bottom moving all food away i am going to leave it over night get it out before i go to work and see what its like tommorrow night il let you know :smitten: :smitten:

i haven't heard of that! :o hehe don't think it would fit! we'd need about 3 freezers! ::) ;D and i wouldn't really want to get it damp as karen said. :-\

sounds a bit... strange lol ;D
I won't be doing this cos 1. It'll get damp and too cold for them 2. My mum would go mad! ;D

i wouldn't freeze it my hubby would have a fit and besides that zoe is sick enough now i woulodn't want to freeze hay and risk her health further. if this is true about freezing hay then it would be more known about. nup not for me, too much risk involved especially with dampness as karen said and mould etc. think i like my hay fresh for my babies but each to their own. as for the microwave and hay that sounds a bit dangerous to me. hugs and cuddles to you and yours. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I've frozen Carefresh before (a long time ago). If you do freeze anything, you need to make sure it is sealed up, so no moisture gets in.

Well i did it i put tit in a sealed bag and froze it over night then took it out this morning and left it till now cleaned the piggies out and gave them the hay which by now was at room temp and not damp in the slitest and they went mad for it as they always do :smitten:

I was told by my nurse to boil my children bedding every day and freeze their stuffed toys once a week to kill of dust mites and any yukky micro things, as Charlie used to have bad ezsma and Amy had asthma

It was hard work and i did it for a month and it worked things picked up, but it was such hard work i just could keep changing and washing bedsheets each day,

so i expect the vet may of been coming this angle may be, but hay in the freezer, ? No i don't thinks so, besides i think Rich would have a fit ;D

my hubby would have a fit too :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:. i still feel the hay would lose something in the freezing process in the way of nutrients. i still don't think i would do it. if others do it then that is their choice, but doesn't sound like something i will be doing. hugs and cuddles to you and your piggies. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I thought you weren’t supposed to feed rodents frozen veg so how come it’s safe to do it with hay?

& I too wonder about what temp would kill critters.

I would be wary of this, plus most hay is pretty safe, just make sure * don't buy cheap nasty stuff and * should be fine. If ** piggy gets a parasite It's easy enough to treat, gorgeous guineas have a lovely range of lotions and potions to help out
