hi have for guinea pigs 2 males and 2 females (females in separate cage from males) I am pretty sure I am given them to much fresh veg. Currently feeding them sweet corn, spinach, spring greens, carrots, cucumbers, peppers, broccoli (on a rota) and dandelion(occasionally). How often should I be feeding them fresh food alongside their pellets and water and what other fresh food can I give them. Thanks for any advice given

They all get plenty of hay think we go through nearly 2 bags a week lol. Have been taken up a bowl of fresh food for each cage twice a day so that would be about right

Hi there. Each guinea pig needs a cup of vegetables twice a day. Hay needs to make up 80% of their diet so hay should always be available. For other fresh food this link will tell you.

Hi piggyfan is it one cup twice a day or one cup a day? I use to give Edward a cup twice a day but on the safe food guide on here it says one cup a day so I cut him down :(

It is one cup in total. Sorry I was not clear. Personally, I think mine get more then that. I give them one cucumber for the five of them in the morning and then something like a whole romaine in the evening. I am not sure if that makes up one cup. I have never been to precise with them like I know you are meant to be. I just judge it myself.

Another query @piggyfan ...

I notice that the link you provided states never to give anything from the cabbage family - or cauliflower, because it causes gas. I thought cabbage leaves and cauliflower leaves were OK in small quantities.

I read somewhere that you shouldn't give the white part of the cauliflower.

Is this correct?

I have also heard you should not give the white part of cauliflower and would not give it myself. I think the web site is trying to be extra careful as cabbage can cause bloating but many people do give a little now and then. I try not to myself. In small quantities it is fine.

... and Brussel Sprouts too. I have been known to buy a single sprout from Morrisons as me & my OH don't like them. I think one sprout between 3 guinea pigs is OK

Yes that sounds fine. I wonder what the cashier thought though when you just bought one!

I've done it twice so far. Once in Morrisons where the cashier didn't bat an eyelid. I bought 2 sprouts in Tesco yesterday and the cashier couldn't stop laughing but she didn't ask what I wanted 2 sprouts for. Both times, the sprouts cost me 10p but I don't think that means sprouts are twice as expensive in Tesco.

Mine get a bowl of fresh veg in the morning and a bowl of Burgess excel nuggets in the evening. That plus unlimited hay and fresh water. :tu:

i feed fresh food twice a day. a side plate size morning and evening. i cut down the veg slightly if they're having grass though. just whilst it is introduced anyway. you could try offering them fresh herbs :)
