Fresh grass

Grass at this time of year is a joy and actually very high in vitamin C (which is the reason why guinea pigs have disabled the gene complex for producing vitamin C in their body).

However, fresh grass needs to be free of chemicals and dog pee. You also have to be careful when introducing it to guinea pigs who haven't had fresh grass for a while. Always start with a small amount and then feed gradually more with every passing day for at least 3-4 days to allow the specialist digestive bacteria in the gut to ramp up. Otherwise you risk diarrhoea or potentially fatal bloat (we have seen first-hand cases on here).

Also wait with putting your piggies onto the lawn until the ground is dry and warm enough for your own bare feet for 5 minutes. This prevents urinary or respiratory infections since piggies are much lower to the ground. Make sure that they have a place out of the sun, wind and off any cool ground where they can find shelter in the run in spring. Also keep in mind that temperatures in the sun can quickly climb above what your piggies are comfortable with; especially in the coming weeks.
