One of our beloved piggies sadly passed this evening and I'm worried about his brother, who is 14 months old. I know it's soon, but do I contemplate getting him a new companion sooner or later? I'm so gutted at the moment and it feels so wrong to be thinking about this so soon after our baby has departed, but I just want what's best for Rafferty :...

i am sorry about your loss and your piggys loss. i think you need to give your piggy time to grieve his brother.

Remember that when introducing another boar to Rafferty, make sure it is on neutral ground, ie a bath or living room floor and totally clean the cage etc so no fights can outbreak -also make sure the boar is a baby as this will help with bonding as the baby wont be fighting for the dominance so young.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your piggy.

As Moonie8404 said, when you decide to get another piggy and if it is a boar, do it on neutral territory and preferably with a baby boar so that the teenage dominance thing doesn't hit both of the piggies at the same time.

I am assuming that Rafferty isn't neutered, otherwise obviously he could be paired with a sow or two.

It is always difficult knowing the best thing to do in these circumstances. Personalities always play a part.

Keep us posted how things go.

I would leave it perhaps a week or so and see how Rafferty is getting on. Don't leave it too long before finding a friend, as often guineas sink into depression, and a new friend can bring them out of it :)

Thank you all. At the moment, he seems OK, then he was used to Riffy being taken out of the cage for long feeding sessions and trips to the vets, so perhaps he thinks he's just 'on holiday' at the moment. He's always been a quiet piggie in the shadow of his brother, so it's difficult to tell. Lots of cuddles and hugs and kisses for us both I think for the time being. Thank you for your support x

So sorry for your loss :(

I hope everything works out if you decide to get another piggie :)
xx
