We have 2 females that have shared a cage for 3 years. They have always lived side by side ok, not going in for close contact but happy enough to be together. In the last few weeks Lily has started biting Daisy, we have been quite taken aback and concerned about them both really. It doesn't seem to be triggered by anything. They have a reasonable space in a C and C cage with various open ended hideys and floor time each day (although neither a very energetic!). Any ideas why and what to do to prevent this?

Daisy was 3 in August, we adopted lily with little info but assume she was young when we got her so maybe 3,3 and a half?

Hrm, so it probably not a 'get I'm in charge now we're mature now' thing. Has anything changed in their cage?
Piggies are just like people! Sometimes they fall out, especially if they're both fairly dominant.
Give each of them a check over to make sure they aren't irritable due to being in pain :)

Are you witnessing the biting? And if not, where abouts on the body are you finding the bites?

I have absolutely no personal experience with girl pigs but I'm heard that fighting can be a factor when they're in season. Is it time for one of them?

We haven't seen the biting but all the bites are around the shoulder/neck. Vet has seen them and he was the one who said they are bites. Pigs seem very argumentative and Daisy has one bite on her rump as well.

Its possible they have mites as the sores can look very much like bites.
Can you post a photo?

I just want to second @pig in the city
We thought Eddi had sores from something (not sure what), but it turned out to be selnick mites.
Within 36 hours of starting the ivermectin treatment, all of the sores around his neck and shoulders had disappeared.
Eddi had multiple skin samples examined microscopically, and they never showed any form of parasite infection, but the fact that the treatment was so effective showed that he did indeed have mites, and that was the source of his sores.

Even vets can mistake the sores for bites!

Yep, and when one of my boars had a bad case of mites he was biting himself to try to stop the itching. So they could be self inflicted.

This is why I asked about witnessing the bites and where they were. Mine have had an outbreak of lice and I thought there were bites from trying to bond Daisy into the 4. Turns out it's either sores from the lice or they are biting themselves from the itching.

Hi I am Daisys other mummy, I am posting a photo of one of the scabs it isn't the best shot, what do you think?

Following your advice the vet is now treating Daisy and Lily too for lice. I really hope this helps as daisy isn't herself at all.

Hopefully you will notice a huge difference very quickly.
My boy was much better within 36 hours of starting the treatment, so I hope it is the same for Daisy too.
