Has anyone had experience of a pig that has knocked a pair of front teeth out?

Eric rather stupidly managed to break his 2 top front teeth chewing on the bars of his house. They're growing back now, I took him to the vet last week and they said they did not need filing down yet but may do this week.

Is it always necessary to have the opposing set filed, or can they grow back normally without intervention?
 
yes my piggy Patch lost his front teeth - i found them in his carrot one day! lol

I never had them filed by the vet, mine naturally knawed theirs. strange.

Piggies do need their teeth checked once in a while as some piggies dont knaw as much as others. maybe this is the case!

Just keep an eye on them - if you feel it a safer option taking him back to the vet, go for it!

It was all over a girl!rolleyes His cage is next to Babe's because they're going to live together from this weekend (Eric was neutered 4 weeks ago) and within a week he managed to break his teeth trying to get to her! It must be love!x)
 
It depends on how short they have broken; if it is just a few mm there is no problem, but if it is close to the gum then ideally the opposing teeth do need shortening.

When both superior/inferior incisors break, the opposing ones should be trimmed to a similar length, so that when the teeth grow back in, the wear is as normal. Leaving the opposing ones as they are means that they will overgrow while they have nothing to grind against. Overgrowth usually involves curvature to a degree, which can be hard to correct if not caught early. Cubing/dicing the food will be necessary until the teeth are close enough to meet again.

However many people do not treat the opposing teeth and things turn out ok - how, I don't know! If the break is small, I would feel okay leaving the lower incisors as they are, but if it's closer to the gum I would prefer some length be taken off the lowers also.

Dental issues can be confusing and difficult! I have a pig with three incisors (two upper, one lower) after she had one extracted in April. She had dental issues for 3 months prior to that with weekly trimmings and filings at the CCT to treat end-on occlusion. Now I file her incisors once every 7-10 days to keep them in check.
 
Thanks. I'm just going to keep an eye on him for now. He's eating plenty and the vet says the teeth are nearly at a point where they will meet to oppose each other so hopefully they will wear themselves down. I will keep checking until they look to have grown back.
 
Hi there, well as you've been told and know already, there toofies grow back......sometimes not tho
Keep an eye on the toofies and make sure the bottom ones are not digging into the top area where there's just gum.....
Healthy piggies can take care of their own toofies, but sometimes you may need a little help from a very savvy piggie vet who can trim if really needs be.
First of all you must make sure little Eric can still pick up and eat all his foods properly if not it makes the condition worse as it ends up being a vicious circle grrrr

If there's any irregularities with his toofies in future it would be best to get them checked out :)

Thanks. It's been 2 weeks since he broke his teeth andthey are growing back, they're probably about 2/3 the length they should be already. I had to hand feed him veg for the first 2 days because he couldn't pick it up but he soon managed it.
 
I checked Erics teeth yesterday and the bottom teeth look very long, although they are not curving apart or inwards. I've got him booked in this evening for a check up.
