Hi All,

I was out tonight shopping etc and asked mum to feed the pigs for me which she agreed to, I was suprised as she isn't a piggy person! Anyway I came home to find that she brought her own veg over which was from the freezer (although not frozen as she kept it straight in the fridge to use right away) she was throwing it away so thought it would do for the pigs! There was green beans, corn and brocolli!

I came home to find the pigs hadn't touched it although they did eat some fresh celery that she gave them from my fridge! Poor pigs where wheeking all over the place when I opened the front door! So I gave them some lettuce and cucumber and lots of hay and sorry cuddles! I wouldn't mind but we had loads of fresh veggies for them she didn't need to bring her own!

I know she was only trying to help, and she didn't realise frozen foods where a no no but it makes me think should I leave the pigs with her when I'm on holiday!...lol I had to laugh though, I was begining to think my pigs would eat anything but after this episode tonight I realise they are still as fussy as ever!

I think you can feed frozen veg as long as its properly defrosted, but it doesnt have anywhere near as many vits as fresh veg :)

Yeah I was talking to my folks about it the other day, I guess mum thought she'd try it. Sunshine did try some corn but then thought nah not for me! :D

Frozen veg (even defrosted) can cause diarrhoea. It doesn't have the fibrous quality of fresh either :)

If you leave them with mum then leave her a card for feeding- morning meals and evening meals, water etc
Daily routine, check for lumps and bumps, runny eyes, cuts etc
Clean out (however often you do it) how to do it, how much to use of stuff.
Include hay in daily feeding and dry food :)

Might seem patronising but she'll appreciate it I'm sure :) Perhaps leave a list of what veg you get and where from :)

When we went on holidays at the start of the year i gave my mum a full list of fruits and veggies that Duke could eat and liked the most!
I also gave her details of vets etc.. and the emergency hospital.
I printed off the list on here of safe foods as well as i pinched bits from Guinea Lynx and also Sue's Barmy4Boars :) :) :)
and i also gave her this forum's addy and also gave her personal emails of friends that i knew would help her out O0

She referred to her list, and even had my dad doing special shopping trips ::) ::) ::) plus they made the house piggie proof and Duke wandered around a couple of rooms :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

I'm sure with planning on your part and also a few dry runs on foods etc.. she'll be fine O0

My mum cried when Duke left cause she'd enjoyed his company sooo much :smitten:

Thanks for the tips. Yeah I'd leave a list and all numbers for my mum. I'd even leave veggies chopped in the fridge in freezer bags so she knew what was what! :D

Not sure if I'm going away in October yet but if we do I'll take Cuzzy with me as he is on his own at the mo and don't want him to get lonely.

I thought feeding frozen (well, obviously defrosted lol) and cooked veggies were no nos because they have lost nutriants/vitamins from cooking/freezing?

I also thought I read that somewhere Jane, maybe I am going mad 98)

Think I read it at guinea lynx or guineapigcages - not sure...anyway, I personally wouldn't feed frozen/cooked when feeding fresh is so easy :)

A lot of the nutrients are lost, its just veg flavored mush really ;D ;D ;D

Yeah I thought that too which is why I hadn't done it. I don't like frozen veg much either! Yuk! My mum has to use it as she has a wrist injury that means she can't chop and my dads at work all day!

Grow your mum some grass to put in their cage daily. It takes about 10 days before its ready to feed and won't lose any nutritional value until its cut :) Pigs food should be at room temp before you feed it. You're running the risk of diarrhoea otherwise :)

That's a good idea Karen! Was thinking of growing my own grass as well. My garden grass isn't the best our garden was extended and it gets quite boggy down the back so not ideal for the pigs! When I do go away I'll chop everything for mum and label it so she doesn't have to do anything but lift the food out the bags!

I'm hoping we don't go away in October, I would prefer Peter's mum and dad to come up here but they are getting on now so might not be possible. :)

Planet Guinea the New Variety Cereal Grass is fantastic and ready in 10 days after first appearing (which takes about 2 days depending on situation). Sunflower seeds are ok for a treat but take a bit longer to grow. Use old containers (with drainage holes) to grow it. There are sample sizes too if you want to try them out first. This months free sample is Alfalfa with every order, if guinea has bladder probs though I'll send you Chicory :)

I give them lots of fresh veg too but they also love cooked veg too so I'm not going to stop giving it them now just because theres not much nutrients in it. They love it.

My first piggie would help himself to the peas off my dinner if he got the chance.
