Hello lovelies.

Me and my other half were discussing outgoings and incomings money wise and worked out that frozen vegetables would be easier cheaper and least waste. Would they be suitable for guinea munchings too? I didn't think they lost any nuitrients.

xx

I think frozen veg are all blanched prior to packing, so although they may not lose nutrients they lose their crunchyness. Never really considered it as most fresh veg is quite cheap, but under normal circumstances I wouldn't feed cooked veggies. Some of the cheaper frozen stuff may have preservatives in? xx

Thanks nutmeg.

i think it might be sainsburys that just sucks and giving us a decent price for our veg? The other problem is that because we're vegan, we're buying so much veg for ourselves too!

where do you guys buy your veg from, i''ve heard that asdas is pretty good, price wise. I wonder if shopping there, could save us more than a fiver, it if could it would be worth the bus fare. xx

I sometimes give my boys frozen veggies, esp if I'm run out of the fresh stuff during the week, someone (one here cant remember who!) told me that the frozen veggies gives them upset tummies due to bacteria growing quickly of frozen veggies esp if you leave it out for a long time but i've never had a problem with this as my boys gobble it up quickly so it's not left out for hours it gone within seconds. I give my boys frozen broccoli, sweetcorn and carrots sometimes mixed with their fresh greens. :)

I've always shopped at ASDA and I find them quite reasonable. I've never really compared prices to other supermarkets though.

Aldi is good for fresh salad, but do you have a local greengrocers? We have one locally called The Veggie Table, and i usually pick up a huge bag of salad leaves, spinich, kale etc, around five carrots ,a bag of tomatos and a bag of mushrooms for myself for £1.50 :))

Lexy, I found Tescos cheaper than Sainsburys last night. Not sure about Asda as we always spend loads when we go there as stock up on the vegan sausage mixes and fake chicken pieces etc so don't look at the veggie prices.

You could eat the frozen stuff yourselves and give the piggies the fresh stuff? that's what we do lol.

I sometimes get stuff from Lidl. It's pretty cheap although can be a bit hit and miss for what they have in stock. I do enjoy seeing random stuff they have in though - I think trumpets is probably the most bizarre so far!

We have all the major supermarkets here, Sainsburys is by farrrrr the most expensive. Asda is the cheapest. Aldi and Lidl are good too. I don't always find the quality good at our branch of tesco. xx

We love looking at all the random stuff too. Their veggies are good, I always forget to go there though.

if you do home shopping then google asda/tesco voucher codes. I have used tesco delivery quite often in the past and can generally find vouchers for £5-7 off your shop which covers the delivery (and often a bit extra!). Saying that if you have a local greengrocers have a chat with the owner as they often throw away excess leaves on cauliflowers etc and might be willing to keep hold of these for you to help out. My mums convinced her local greengrocer to for us (even though I live other side of the city) and my aunt has an allotment and will be keeping the leaves and bits for us

Where I live within approx 5 mile radius we have 3 x tescos, sainsburys, 2x morrisons, 2 x lidl, netto, iceland, farmfoods, 2x co-ops, Aldi (I think?) and god knows how many corner shops and next year netto and iceland will be turned in to an Asda store.
I live in a smallish town lol

I shop at Sainsburies but usually go half an hour before closing time (Monday is a particularly good day for this or Saturday) you can often pick up bargain veggies for the piggies then.

you could try the market i got a carrier bag of curly kale for £1 3 bunches of coriander/parsley £1 load's of cherry tom's for £1 too it's not open on a monday or sunday but its behind wilkison's in town

Thanks nutmeg.

I wonder, do you have a greengrocers anywhere? They're much better than supermarkets, both for price and I find in taste as well xx

Oh geeeez, I'm so worried now, if i get piggies I'm going to feed them the wrong stuff, I'm so confused- ive never heard of a few of these veggies mentioned on here! I'm not good with veggies, but I'm alright really - round the corner, ive got Co-op, tesco, a green grocer thingy, and a few other little shops in case :) and asdas only 10 minutes on the bus - in the summer id probably walk down there anyway, which would be about an hour :L

dont worry too much variety is the key. i never used to go to the veg section til i got piggies now my weekly shop looks so healthy :))

I get carrots for £1.50 a big bag (we have a carrot man round here, horses eat most of them drool)

I also tend to get cabbage and limpish broccoli from the green grocer for like 50p a bag at about 4pmish if I'm about. I get sprouts for nothing but herbert wont touch them.
