It’s the summer, and it’s incredibly hot both outside and inside my house. I noticed my guinea pigs are most likely feeling the heat, and I want to help them cool down,

I was wandering if I can freeze raw carrots and give it to them as a cool treat. I don’t know if it would be good for them to digest or if it’ll be bad for their teeth.

I feel like as long as they’re not so frozen that it hurts or they’re too cold to hold for more than a few seconds, then I don’t see why not!

Please DO NOT give your piggies anything frozen or even very cold. It slows down their digestion and causes bloat, which can kill. I have seen so many rubbish posts about this in the Internet suggesting it’s safe. It isn’t.
I’m so sorry. Please listen to VickiA, as you don’t want your piggies to be hurt

No need to apologise. I’ve seen so many posts on the internet showing ice pops and frozen veg for piggies but it’s much safer to simply feed them a refreshing piece of melon or veggies at their normal feeding temperature and to place frozen bottles or packs in the cage to provide some cooler areas in the cages. You also have to be wary of overfeeding watery veg in this heat. The temptation to overfeed watery veg and fruit in hot weather!

Thank you. Yeah you don’t know what to trust on the Internet. Of course! And it’s safer

Hi!

Please take the time to read this detailed guide here, which also contains lots of tips on how to keep your piggies and your lodgings as cool as possible and how to spot the symptoms of potentially fatal heat stroke and what you need to do: Hot Weather Management, Heat Strokes and Fly Strike

Please run some cold water over your bathtub or shower tray and then place your piggies on the cooled surface; that is much more effective in lowering the body temperature than feeding frozen veg.

Freeze two water filled bottles (keeping in mind that ice expands) so you can exchange them and always have another fresh one waiting. Wrap them in a bit of fleece or a kitchen towel before placing in the cage.

Placing a damp towel over the cage also helps - the evaporating water will cool down the surrounding air.

Please do not feed large frozen pieces. We have at least one first-hand member account where this led to a piggy's tongue getting stuck to the ice and severely injury. Fridge cooled veg and crushed ice added to fresh tap water in your regularly change water bottles is more effective - especially if you insulate the bottle with a sock to keep the water as cool for as long as possible.

Wait. I keep all my veggies in the fridge for my piggies and they are chilled..

Oh no
