Hey all,

I have just realised that Herbie seems to be getting HUGE, I am feeding him different fruit and veg (mostly veg fruit is an occasional treat) with his guinea pig food but he seems to be getting very big.

I was just wondering how many times a week you feed yous as I give Herbie (I think I'm giving him it too much) a decent sized amount (maybe too much) 2 times a day every day with his guinea pig food.

Is this too much and if so can people give me some sort of clue whether I should cut it down or not please.

Thanks all

Sarah x

Hi,

Some piggies do get very large.I have 3 boys who are all nearly 4bls. At the other end of the scale I have a perfectly happy boar who is only just over 2 bls. They do vary the same as people do,.

Does Herbie get plenty of excercise, this is very important for all pigs.

Do not cut back on his veggies because they get their vitimins from these.I feed my pigs 3 times a day with veggies.,medium amounts.,but 2 lots of veggies a day is fine.

same problem, the vet has told me to put georgie on a diet! easier said than done with 2 littlies in with her , she said to cut down on pellets, and make sure she exercises, how do i make her exercise more? she's in the run on the grass all day and if it's to wet she has her own 8ft shed to run around in,any ideas ,please she weighs 1200 grams a bit lardy guilty as charged!

Rodney is quite a large pig but he is very active, I give him fruit and veg every day. :)
I would still give him the same amount but try to make him work for his food. You can put some on hanging kabob skewers, hide some in his hay and just place it around his cage inside or on top of things. It will keep him occupied and help him to exercise more. As said on here before i'd rather have a podgy piggy than a skinny one.

I give my piggies veg daily, sometimes twice a day - it just depends really how much grass they get and stuff for me.

I wouldn't cut down the amount you are giving - it sounds fine to me :) Some pigs are just generally quite chunky - how much does he weigh? :D

i feed fresh veg twice a day, try not to give as much fruit but more veg.

Cutting down on pellets is OK but give more hay/Readigrass. As long as your pigs are fit their weight doesn't really matter- only when they start to lose it :) I have only ever had one truly obese piggy that my vet said she would not want to operate on, he lived with 3 other 'perfectly' healthy normal pigs.

I give mine mostly veg twice a day although I must say I am giving them brocolli, carrot, curly kale, cucumber and have just introduced baby cobs. They eat most of it every day and I am running out of ideas and I am slightly concerned about exactly what foods I am giving them as most of it appears to be on the "gassy list" of foods for guineas ::). Does anyone have ideas of what normal veg I can give them that is available from the supermaket that isn't on the gassy list :-\. They don't like fruit much at all

i feed mine twice a day. don't worry some are just big chunky chappies/girlies, i wouldn't cut down, you're doing fine! :) :)

The foods you have mentioned are fine.My piggies get all of these.I give small amounts of veggies to my pigs,3 times a day,but twice a day is fine.

Besides the veggies mentioned, mine enjoy, lettuce(as a twice weekly treat)
tomatoes,
spring greens
green cabbage
pointed cabbage
large corn cobs,leaves and silk
celery
cauli leaves
grapes
melon
chicory
parsley
coriander
basil
dill

These are the most favourite veggies, there are others that they can have.Cabbage, broccoli and kale could cause gas, but, only if fed in large amounts. The trick is to vary the veggies as much as possible.I put 2 or 3 different varieties in the bowl at each feed. All of the veggies could cause problems if given every day in large amounts, but fed in moderate amounts several times a week.non of them would be harmful.

my holly is very large too but she dosent eat that much really my 3month old boys eat more then holly dose and holly is 20months old

some guinea pigs are meant to be very large and some are just samll

i feed mine in the moring and at night

i was wondering whether they could have coriander as i always see it reduced in tescos. now i see they can so i'll try it! what other herbs can they have apart from parsely?

Yes they can have coriander but some pigs do not like it.Other safe herbs are

basil
mint
dill

I do a quarter cup in the morning a quarter cup in the evening, and a couple slices of fruit as treats in the afternoon after handling. But I have two cavies eating out of the same dish in the morning and evening feedings, and they are about 4 month old sows, so they are still growing.
