I don't very often give my guinea pigs fruit (maybe once or twice a week), partly because they're just not fond of it and also because they're high in sugar. At the moment though, my fruit bowl is over flowing and I'm not going to eat it all, so I was wondering if I could share any of it with my piggies rather than waste it. I have a list of foods guinea pigs can eat and all feature on it, but I was curious as to whether it was a) true or not and b) how to feed it to them.

I have;
-Apples (which I know they can eat, but they're not hugely fond of)
-Bananas (I would never have thought of feeding this to guinea pigs? It says in small amounts)
-Kiwis (can they eat the skin, or does it need to be peeled first?)
-Oranges (they're not a fan of orange slices but, again, the list says they can have orange peel? Is that true?)

In the past I've just fed my guinea pigs melons (they particularly like the rind), apples, pears and some berries, so these more 'exotic' fruits are a new one for me.

Thanks!

Fruit should be fed very sparingly as the sugar in it...
Apples they will eat
Banana's go down well with some piggies, our piggy Cookie actually runs away scared from them :)) it must be the smell... it used to be funny as her sister loved them....
Kiwis always peel, I worry about the seeds in teeth though...
Oranges, I would avoid for the acidity

My guinea pigs aren't massive fans of fruit anyway, so even if I wanted to feed it to them regularly (which I wouldn't), I don't think they'd eat it, haha!

But that's great information, thanks. I've been holding off on the kiwis and bananas as I really wasn't sure what to do with them (as I've mentioned, they eat apple and they ignored it when I tried to feed them orange).

I used to have a guinea pig who was scared of any fresh food you put in the cage. She would always run away and hide until she saw her sister chomping down on it.

Yeah we have just tried flesh of kiwi to make sure no seeds but it was ignored more than the asparagus attempt :))

Awwwww bless her

Haha Doughnut ran off when I first gave him some banana to try too! I thought he was the only one who had a phobia of bananas. :))

:)) Another one eh! Doughnut is a great name :)

She really wrestles with her conscience as she knows it is food and would be looking at Treacle eating it and then edging forward to us offering it her, then she'd run off again....

Thanks! One of the reasons why I gave him that name is because of the white stripe he has. He also has a stripe vertically up his chin, doesn't quite reach his mouth though. I think he may be a mismarked dutch cross or something similar. Either way, he's beautiful and I love him. :)

Haha sounds like Cookie trusts Treacle to be the chief taster. :))

Edit: Forgot to mention; after Doughnut ran away from the scary-looking banana slice, I left it in his bowl, only to discover it had mysteriously disappeared later on. Looks like he built up the courage to eat it after all!
