Urgh I am so fed up! I live in a flat, I keep him as clean as I can & remove any leftover veg when I get home but I just keep getting plagued by these little fruit fly things by Billys cage! They're driving me mad!

Any tips for stopping them? Anyone else suffer with this?

Hi there,

I haven't had this problem with guinea pigs in particular but with fruit in general before now. I feel like it's sometimes linked to where you get the fruit from. For example, when we used to shop at Asda there seemed to be a lot of them. We now get our fruit and veg from Aldi and haven't had the problem since. Not sure if there is anything in it, just an observation.

I don't give him lots of frui tho it's the veg it's coming from... Or that's attracting them anyway!

Not sure whether they limit themselves to fruit as the name implies or whether they'll just hang around anything fresh?

Get an old cup or mug and fill it with a small amount of vinegar, a teaspoon of honey and 1 drop of washing up liquid.
Mix together and cover the top of the mug tightly with cling film.
Poke few small holes in the cling film (a toothpick works well for this) and place this near or on top of the hutch.
The fruit flies will fly in and drown.

l think inerupting the life cycle may help
the life cycle of a frute flie is aprox 8 days , perhaps if you clean and sanatize everythink , getting rid of all fly eggs/casts
Then a good clean every 6 days,

worked for me

Ugh... I get them in the summer in my kitchen. I make sure to not leave any dishes sitting out and scrub down the sink as well. Then I put an open glass with vinegar in the bottom on the edge of the sink. They will go towards the vinegar, fall in, and drown themselves. If you aren't catching many, you can always put plastic wrap over the top and poke holes with a fork, makes it harder for them to escape if they don't fall in on the first pass!

i house sat for someone years ago & was there for a about a week
at the start of the week there were lots of fruit flies, i text them & asked if they normally had a problem with them as i had never noticed them before when i was visiting.
said not normally - by the the end of the week it was making me miserable - i couldn't put any food down on the table without a cloud of flies appearing, the house was clean & i didn't leave any mess - but they kept coming! 4 very full flypapers later still coming! :vom:

turned out it was a bag of potatoes in the kitchen cupboard had got pushed behind some boots/bags & had started to go off.
i removed the bag & cleaned up the spills from the potato bag & normality was resumed :)

you haven't had a stray item of fruit or veg gone to the back of a cupboard or rack that's attracting them have you?
good luck with the little critters!

xx
