Fruit flies have randomly appeared out of nowhere near the piggies caves think they were after cucumber. I’d never really had any flies inside usually good like that. So I’ve ordered some traps. Cant really use the spray with the piggies!

I guess this is another thing to be aware of when having piggies! Wish there was a way to stop this hopefully traps will work though.

is this common for others? Or is it just time of year.

do they cause fly strike to the pigs?

Hi there :D
So far I have never had this problem, only with my parrot.
House fly's can cause fly strike to guinea pigs but for fruit fly's I don't think they could do any harm.
Are u leaving the fruit and veg out for long periods of time ? Fruit fly's usually appear to feed on left over fruits and veg.

Fruit flies will not cause any harm at all to your guinea pigs.
They are simply after the fresh fruit and veg.

Their life cycle is short, so if you prevent them having exposure to fresh fruit and veg for a few days they will go away very quickly.
A good natural trap is a cup with apple cider vinegar and dish soap in it.
How to Make Your Own Fruit Fly Trap

Obviously this needs to be kept well out of reach of your piggies!

Always remove any uneaten veggies and fruit your piggies leave after one hour. Do a poo pick twice a day. This then leaves no place for the fruit flies to lay their eggs so you should eliminate them pretty quickly x
