Okayso.

I've had my little piggies for over a month now (Wow!), and of course I love them to bits. I have come to understand their individual needs to an extent and they are both fantastic, unique characters. They've settled in very well, aren't picky eaters anymore.

However - I'm still not sure what to do with certain things.

Like - every day I get them out of their cage at random times to go on my lap, or on my bed, or on the sofa downstairs. My sister likes to hold them and pet them, and they get lots of attention at least once a day for a while.

However, they tend to huddle together rather than explore or be curious. O_o Laurie may sniff around a bit, but that's it. I have them in my room, in my parents room, in the living room - and I always take one downstairs to the kitchen when I make their dinner in the evening.

If I put them on the floor - they just sit there together. o_o

They never seem displeased. They'll make funny little chatting noises when you pet them, or sometimes they'll make a content purr, but that's it. They don't actually want to move around. XD

I tried to see if it'd work if I just took one out - but if I have one on my lap, the other one in the cage discovered that his brother is gone and starts wheeking, which causes the one on my lap to pop his head up all confused. O_o;

Sooo...

I'm wondering - is this normal? XD Are piggies usually so docile and loving, but.. Inactive?

I would've thought that they'd benefit from more exercise outside of the cage.

I've had Fudge about 4 months now and he is curious, stands on top of his house to see me better, and is not scared any more. However the only time he's active is when I put his hay in for him and he goes mad popcorning. This lasts about 5 mins when he stops and sits on it and goes to sleep ::) When I put him in a run he just sits there. So I'd say yours is as inactive as mine!

XD Haha, I know what you mean about the hay. I usually put the piggies in their cage full of hay before I put their house/dishes/etc. in it, and they go crazy.

LOL I have 2 girls that are so like that! Icey and her daughter Tiny, 4 plus yrs old and 3 plus. Let them out for a run round the house and/or garden, and they just sit there!

My others, girls and boys will gladly explore, but noy these two - oh no! They are the most laziest girls ever which is why they are both chubby! :D

I think some are just lazy. When I put Leroy and Malcolm on the floor they don't do much. Leroy usually runs off to hide but Malcolm sometimes doesn't even do that. He'll just sit where he is put all evening. Once I dropped a saucepan lid on the kitchen floor by accident and not even that moved him.

They are both chubby :D

When you think of a rat or hamster or mouse, they never keep still and they're built for that, very flexible and sleek but when you look at the shape of a guinea, like round! they're more interested in finding a nice place to lie and sleep and eat, and eat ....

Maybe if you try putting little piles of food around they may look for it?

ps I like the names.

My piggies dont like open spaces. Maybe instinct, because then they would be easy prey for large birds?

I put lots of little things on the floor (wooden bridges, a few cardboard houses with several openings, drainpipes, etc) so that they can hide whenever something scares them. If there is nothing to hide, they just sit still - maybe instinct again, if at least I dont move, I wont be noticed..

I think plenty of toys in the run are good because

a) It makes the whole thing more interesting, they can go round exploring
b) Makes them feel secure because they can hide if need be

Why should a piggy run around if there is nothing worth running around for?
so I think treats (mmmmmm cucumber bits) and interesting things in the run (nice, chewy cardboard) will make every piggy a bit more active.

But what is often the case:

Piggies have a phase where they just zonk out and sleep, and phases where they are very active. If you happen to put them in the run when they are feeling dozy, then later when they are back in the cage they are active - happens :-\
Which is why I have a permanent little run attached to my cage with argos grids, so that they can have a little run whenever they want to, not just when I have the time to put them in a run.

Mine are an hour on, hour off. They popcorn around for a while then go back to bed, bit later they are back up again. When they are active, they are very active! When they are being lazy - well.... they're lazy!

Hi you,

Ive had Ginge and Nugget almost 5 months now. Nugget is very quiet in their home but when i let them both out at night for a run round the lounge, he goes mad! :) He popcorns, and runs round and around the sofa, then Ginge joins in...its so funny to watch. After a bit they both settle down on a pillow under the coffee table.

When i first had them they would be still and not do alot, but i think they are both getting used to us now. I also hide bits of cucumber or apple in places for them to find...in fact if i dont hide any treats Ginge normally tells me and keeps on wheeking until i go into the kitchen to get some! Cheeky monkey :)

My two are active sometimes and just sit there at others so just like everyone has been saying really!
