A friend of mine has her own boarding kennel/pet sitting/dog walking business and she is going on holiday next week for 5 days. I will be running the kennels whilst she is away, and i will be taking fudge and crunchie with me as they are both on medication at the moment (and i cant bear to part with fudge for so long incase she takes a bad turn!). The kennels are in the countryside, she owns a little holding where the house is too. She has a huge garden area, lovely grass which isnt treated so will be great for the girls to have a supervised run around (mustnt forget to pack their pen!).

They have a cat, so the girls will be staying in a 120 ferplast cage to er on the side of caution with the cat around, as apposed to an open top c&c.

Now to my question!

They have 5 rescue hens and a duck, that are free roaming during the day. They do have their own yard that they could stay in whilst the girls have grass time in the actual maintained garden. Do they or their waste pose a risk to my sows? They do roam in the garden at free range time (the hens) so i wouldnt want to take a risk if they could cause harm with their droppings etc.

Anyone have choocks and piggies?!

:D I would keep the birds away from the area where you intend to put the piggies pen. Their droppings could make the girls ill, if they eat any grass with droppings on. The duck won't do them any harm, but chickens can be bolshy sometimes and might try to peck the pigs.

Yeah will keep the hens in their yard whilst piggies have grass time, will actually put the pen up and leave it up so i know the hens arent using it. Thats if i even have the time- 2 piggies with meds 3 times a day, 12-15 dogs, a resident dog, a resident cat, hens and a duck! I'm gonna be busy! :mal:

If any wild animals go through the area, like rabbits or deer, then watch out for fleas and ticks.

But think of all that lush green grass that Fudge loves so much. Happy holidays all three of you xx

One slave is going to be super busy though - are you going to be doing your day job too?

Hens and particularly ducks waste can be prolific, sloppy and smelly, so quite apart from the risk of catching something from it, it would not be nice for piggies, whose bodies are so close to the ground, to come into contact with it! I'd section a bit off with a pen and keep it in place so the birds can't get in there during your stay (I've nothing against birds btw I keep hens myself but wouldn't mix them with my piggies).

Think thats the plan, gonna put there pen up then water the area to wash away anything thats there.. Then give it a day or 2 before putting them in it :-) thank you

Title is like a famous five novel :)
