Hiya my guinea pig fudge has been having a crackling noise in his nose and it won’t go away, he was suffering with respiratory infections has been on antibiotics
and nothing seems to help , he also went to emergency vet due to having gut stasis which has all cleared up now , but his nose is like a crackling sound i’m wondering will a nebulizer help?
and which one to get ? and what i would need to do as i’ve never done this before
when i went emergency vet they said a nebulizer could help, but they never told me how to do it which one i would need to get and where from
vets have never done X-rays on fudge and i feel like he’s been completely ignored 😢it’s been going on since september 17th and we have got no where
everytime i go vets they say he’s fine
but when i pick him up his chest sound even worst like his lungs , any help would be great thankyou .

Hi

If you want to trial whether a nebuliser might help, I would recommend placing a bowl of steaming water close to the cage where he usually sits to see whether that eases symptoms.
The other improvising option is a half hour session on a dry towel in a steamed up shower.

You can take it then from there without going into unnecessary cost. Nebulising can really help some piggies with remaining symptoms but it is not an all-heal measure suitable for all.

All the best for working out whether it may really help yours.

would it be kettle hot water next to him to see if that helps
i’ve tired it in shower and it doesn’t help

You can try but if the kettle doesn't help then is more unlikely that your piggy is one where nebulising doesn't work on since there is no infection concern.

i’ve tried the kettle water
seems to helped a tiny bit
yeah he’s definitely got something there as he’s really crackly
will be ringing vets again tomorrow to see what they said

All the best! It is always a lot more difficult when you are past the standard treatment. This is about one of the most awkward times for it to happen, too; so you have my sympathies!

I don't know which vets you are using but I recommend the exotics department at Highcroft on the Wells Road. They got Brillo and Red through a very bad pneumonia. They are not the cheapest vets by a long way but they really know guinea pigs.
Sending your boy healing vibes. I hope he gets well soon.

Hiya been to a vet today and they said my guinea pig fudge lungs don’t sound the best
so think i am gonna ask for a X-ray as he really need to see what going on with him😢been too long , does anyone know a rough idea on X-rays? like how much they would be please

I’ve merged your threads as it’s important to keep all info together

Please ensure that you weigh daily and support him with syringe feeding if his weight has dropped, as the need to breathe comes ahead of the need to breathe. I’ll link the syringe feeding guides. You can use mushed pellets as a short term measure.

Vet charges vary tremendously so it’s best to ask your vets for a quote for xraying

The nebulisers members use are in the link piggies&buns posted above. I use the Omcron C28P which is the one the vets recommend, it has a finer mist than most which is better for guinea pigs delicate airways (It's designed for children and adults). I bought mine in Boots as I needed it in a hurry, we went straight there on the way home from the vet!

Is there any chance i can use a different one at all? like a cheap one so sorry struggling at the moment due to all the vet bills for fudge

I have also seen people using nebuliser but the mask bit and putting it next to the piggy’s face? is that okay or no? i can put him in a container

Would the hangsun nebuliser machine be okay for my guinea pig ? and will i just need saline solution

would this one be okay for a guinea pig ? and saline soloution
how much would i have to put in of that too

i called a place about nebulising and they said to just do tap water and put him in for 10 mins and if he’s stressed to take him out

Which solution to use depends on why you are nebulising. I have always used F10 antiseptic solution (not disinfectant) because I've always used the nebuliser for infections. We can't tell you what is best to use you need to ask a vet. I don't know about those nebulisers as I can't remember the size of the mist you need, again you would need to ask a piggy savvy vet. The Omcron one is recommended because of the fineness of the mist. I know it's one that is suitable for children because of the fine mist, a don't think an adult one works so well on guinea pigs. You will need to read the instructions with the nebuliser to see how much solution to put in, they are all different. It's better to use a container than hold the mask near a piggies face. 10 minutes is what my vet recommended, twice a day normally. If he gets stressed you may have to do a shorter time and build it up slowly unti he gets used to it, putting some food in the container with him helps. I did have one piggy who got so stressed and wouldn't settle I didn't nebulise him in the end.

Oh okay i asked my vet about nebulising he only yes said that would be good
he didn’t tell me anything about how to do it and stuff it was with the pdsa ive just ordered a nebuliser and everything 😩😩
they told me to use just water

i’m gonna be nebulising for fudge his breathing is really crackly he’s now on antibiotics for 10 days … he’s on metacam once a day and Co-trimazole for 10 days too he’s definitely got somthing in his lungs but my pdsa hasn’t suggested X-ray or anything gonna have to go to a proper vet i think
but he did say about nebulising
he just didn’t tell me what to do or what i would need so I'm a bit confused now

i have cancelled my order as a bit worried it not a good nebuliser will be taking him to a vet tomorrow to see what they say

I’ve been trying to write this for day but i’ve never known how to start it , i am sorry again i must be a pain , Fudge has been with pdsa since september he had respiratory infections as first and it went away , he’s been on a lot of antibiotics since September and he’s had 3 injections so far I'm really worried if these antibiotics are making him weaker , he’s will go on antibiotics like example right now he’s on them , he will eat his pallets and drink his water and move around more but as soon as he comes off them antibiotics he’s bad again like he’s gonna down hill, i’m very confused why this could be happening
could he be addicted to antibiotics?
he’s only 10 months old and he’s been a couple since september i’m really worried about him
he’s been having a crackling noise in his nose a while now he’s on antibiotics it’s gone? how strange , but he’ll come off them and it will be right back , like pdsa said his lungs don’t sound the best but i can’t understand what is going on with fudge he’s never had a X-ray or anything which i though they would have by now and thats why i need to go to a normal vet , his head is always nodding , and he’s not as active as he use to me
could this be a ear infection ? but then would his nose be making a crackling noise ?
it’s been going on for so long and i find it so strange that fudge will be fine on antibiotics then when he’s off them he’s all different again it’s really worrying i can’t get my head around why this is happening , he didn’t eat pallets for a few days so i’ve done syringe feeding he really doesn’t like it at all he refuses i still try my best with him though
he went off water? the only thing he won’t go off is vegetables and hay 🤷🏽‍♀️also like i said he has antibiotics and makes him eat and drink again it’s so weird to me I'm confused by it all i dont know whats causing this problem at all
please can anyone help me
thankyou all ever so much
just need some help .

I’m afraid we can’t really suggest much more than to see a knowledgeable vet for further checks.
He isn’t addicted to antibiotics - that’s just not possible. It’s sounds like the antibiotics suppress the issue but once he comes off of them the problem returns. It’s a case of further checks to find out what the issue is.

All we can suggest is what has already been said - switching to home care of daily weight checks and syringe feeding and seeing if steaming water and/or nebulising helps ease symptoms.

Do remember that hay is the most important part of their food intake. When you syringe feed it is not because he isn’t eating pellets, you syringe feed because a pig isn’t eating enough hay and their weight is dropping.
