Last week fudge stopped eating, we took him to the vet and they have trimmed his back teeth, we are syringe. Feeding him but he just seems so lafargic, he's sat on my chest as I'm typing this, he's just in a daze, he wanders around when I put him on the floor then settles somewhere, his treatment was 24hrs ago, he's had metacam, took him back to the vet this evening and they said monitor him keep feeding him.

Is this a normal thing after treatment? I'm so worried I just need to put my mind at rest and know he will get better really stuck, doing all the vet told us to do poor thing is just not himself he does want any fresh veggies, or any food, giving him syringe food with no problem.

Hi!

it is perfectly normal that guinea pigs can't yet chew well after dental treatment and need syringe feeding. Please keep that up as much as he will take. You will find that our syringe feeding guide contains a chapter on care of dental guinea pigs.

I suspect that your boy has unfortunately rather had a bad reaction to the anaesthetics. The number of vets who are experienced with guinea pig dentals is sadly very small in this country. Please contact your vet if he is not picking up or deteriorating.

I am tagging our dental experts for you; they are caring for dental piggies on a regular basis.

they do seem to be a bit tired after and rest quite alot. some can be more lethargic than others after an anaesthetic aswell but hopefully this will wear off as time goes on and he should start to seem less lethargic. if he appears to be getting more lethargic then contact your vet again.

he may need more metacam for a while longer as his mouth settles down so if you haven't been given any to bring home then you could discuss this with your vet and see if they recommend he has some for a little while to help him feel more comfortable.

hopefully he will start gradually eating more by himself soon. syringe feeding will keep him going until he does.

sounds like you keep a close eye on him anyway but if you don't feel he's quite right, contact the vet again :)

Thanks for your reply

We're super worried, and probably being over cautious, we hate seeing them suffer

absolutely gorgeous! :luv::luv::luv: hope you feel lots better soon little one.

I just put some grated carrot in for him, he seems to be intrigued as to what I have but he's not managing to get as far as nibbling, but it's positive

He's trying to eat now, we can see he wants the food but he can't get it started

Given him fine stuff Carrots top, finely chopped kale, give him a few more syringes before bed and a good wipe around the month in the morning some metacam and hopefully he can manage a bit, he's perked up a little bit he's wandering around now.

I'd give him probiotics whilst on metacam, my lass had a tummy upset whilst on it, it'll help. Glad he's trying :)

Hi,

Our little girl Fudge had the same on Tuesday and she is now starting to come around . She is is now able to eat hard pellets in small numbers, but we are still having to hand feed

Hi Bazza, has your Fudge been pooing? We've just call the vets as he hasn't done anythin.

Poor little thing wants to eat we gave him a piece of cucumber just a small piece looked like he was going to eat eat but he spat it back out

Ok, he's still not himself today, or yesterday, he's done some poos, still syringe feeding him, Metacam but he is still just sat there in a daze, he will have a little sniff at veggies and hay but that's it, he just looks so tired, sits on me comes up to my neck cuddles into me
