Hi Guys my little guy is 3.5 years old he started losing a little weight 8 months ago, over the course of about 6 months he lost 100g he went from 1260-1120g.

At first we thought it was because he had a new cage mate and was using more energy, when it got to the 100g mark I took him to the vet who said his tummy was tender and gave him a shot of metacam he perked up and went back up to 1160g.

A few months later he lost weight again went down to 1060 took him to the vets they could find nothing wrong, gave him some childrens liquid nurofen he went back up to 1120g.

A few months later he stopped eating anything except fresh veggies went down to 970g took him to the vet again they could find nothing wrong. Gave him nurofen, infacol, gripe water and buscopan over the course of a week to see if anything helped. (one treatment a night) he picked up after the buscopan back to 1120g

5 weeks later he started losing weight again this time he was still eating tried the treatments above again, nothing worked weight went down to 980g.

Managed to find a vet who had trained with Peter Gurney and took him there (thank you TGPF) this was last week. They kept him overnight and ran loads of tests on him.

His xrays show 2 stones stuck in the tubes between his kidney and his bladder one in each side and another 2 stones forming again 1 in each kidney.

His blood tests show he has kidney and liver damage and where the stones are at the moment they are inoperable, he is home with us now for however long we have left.

We are treating him with hydrangea root tincture and chanca powder plus, he is also taking 0.9ml septrim twice a day for 2 weeks and fibreplex probiotic. I am also syringing him extra food and water although he fights the syringe we are getting better at it.

I wanted to let everyone know that apart from losing weight and occasionaly looking puffed up there was no other indication he was ill.

He did not wheek when weeing, there was no blood in urine and even when the vet felt him all over he gave no sign that he was in pain anywhere.

His weight fell to 925g I have now got him up to 943g he has lost about a quarter of his weight since I first noticed the weight loss.

He is still wheeking and flinging himself at cage door for veggies, he still comes out for a run around during playtime and apart from eating more slowly than usual and sitting looking puffy you wouldnt know there was anything wrong.

The vet has advised against metacam and nurofen as pain killers due to the liver damage but has said it will be a judgement call if we feel he is in too much pain.

Touchwood at the moment he doesnt appear to have any pain just maybe a little uncomfortable, he is still weeing which is good.

As he has not been eating as much as normal his poops are tiny and sticky but he is still passing them. We are giving him a small dose of metatone to help his appetite after checking with a rodentologist who advised the benefit of the good stuff in it outweights the small amount of calcium.

Sorry for the long post if anyone can think of anything we are not doing or a pain killer that wont effect his liver please let me know.

Thanks for Reading

I am so sorry for your sad news and hope he doesn't have to go through too much pain. He is lucky to have such caring parents!

I'm so sorry for the diagnosis. Kidney stones (or stones in the ureter - tube between kidney and bladder) are more difficult to manage than bladder ones.

Your judgement call on the pain relief but my personal take on it is better to keep piggie out of pain. Quality of life will be affected by the pain and may upset his appetite, at which stage the pig loses a big part of what it is to be a pig. If on painkillers long-term it only *might* affect the liver, it's a risk but not a given. Pain is more likely to be a given. It is your call though, you know him best. xx

Thanks for the kind messages

Laura I think you have misread my post the blood tests confirm he has liver and kidney damage already which is why painkillers are a judgement call.

Thanks for the kind messages

Laura I think you have misread my post the blood tests confirm he has liver and kidney damage already which is why painkillers are a judgement call.

Apologies, I missed that part, having gone back and reread it I can see it now.

I've no further suggestions at the moment, but wishing you all the best with Fugly.

Fugly has gone downhill overnight he lost 50g now only weighs 893g 8...8...8...8...8...8...8...8...

I have decided to stop the septrim in case it has upset his stomach, he has had it for a week anyway. I will keep giving him the probiotics to help.

I have also given him childrens nurofen painkiller I figure if he doesnt pick up weight soon we have lost him anyway and any damage done by the nurofen wont really effect his life expectancy.

I hope these measures make him pick up, I am so heartbroken at the moment.

I'm afraid I don't have any practical advice but just wanted to wish you all the best and hope that he picks up. You're obviously doing everything you can but I completely empathise with the heartbreak and helplessness that you must be feeling. Hang in there x

Oh and I also meant to say, thank you for sharing this with us. I doubt I'm alone in saying that I'd always expect to find blood in the urine with any stones, so it's definitely helpful to hear of your experience as this knowledge could perhaps help others in similar situations.

I'm so sorry that you're having such a terrible time and really hope for an improvement in little Fugly's condition x

I am so sorry for your struggle; it is so difficult and heartbreaking for you when there is so little you CAN do for Fugly!

I agree with Laura that keeping Fugly as comfy and painfree is probably the best you can do under the circumstances.

BIG HUG

M i'm so sorry to hear he's lost more weight and struggling 8...8...8...8...

Fugly Has Gone

Thank you to everyone for your kind thoughts and wishes.

Sadly Fugly declined again overnight and this morning we made the heartbreaking decision to help him cross the rainbow bridge.

I know he is pain free and that what we did was for the best but my heart is torn in 2 at the moment.

I know you all understand

Goodbye my little blonde bombshell Fugly (aka Agent F, Fugster)

Mummy and Daddy miss you so much

So so sorry for your loss. Fugly sounds like a truly special piggy and although your heart is breaking right now it won't always feel so sad to reflect on the good times and cherish all the happy memories. Thinking of you x

I'm so sorry for your loss, he was obviously dearly loved.

Rest well, sweet Fugly xx

pain killers for my piggie

Hi, my piggie has been to the vet for what we thought was a urine infection. He has antibiotics but 4 days on, he is losing more blood in his urine. We now wonder if he has stones. We can't afford to get them operated on, does anyone have a suggestion about pain killers snf something that could break the stones down and he can then pass. Thank you.

Beth.
