My dad and his girlfriend came round earlier and since it's the first time either of them had seen the new girls or the cage I was excited to show my little ones off. My dad loved them and laid down next to the cage to get a better look while his girlfriend stood in the middle of the room and boomed 'ERGH! I effing hate rodents, the one's with long hair aren't so bad but that one (hoster, my short-haired piggy) is the ugliest thing I've ever seen!'

Now I'm quite a calm person usually, and believe it or not I normally get on reasonably well with this woman but I proper lost it! I was seriously this close <---> to lumping her one. Instead I told her she was the ugliest woman I'd ever seen and to get out of my house before I did something she'ld regret.

I'm still fuming now grrrr, how can anyone think it's ok to talk about someone's pets that way?

Sorry for the rant, I just can't believe someone would say something like that!

i got very cross with one of by bf friends who called my little cottonbud devil pig because she has red eyes, did not tell him to leave but did tell him if he could not be nice he could leave the room and sit in the kitchen.

I don't know he thought he was being fun, but i did not find it funny!

Oh nooooooooooo i'm so sorry love, some people have no idea how to be humane at all :)>>>

HUGS for you xxxxxxxxxxx

I too have the same thing from my MIL (mother in law) she hates them, calls them rats (grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ......)
so i can sympathise with you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I think now you have to chat with your dad, can you do that?
Let him know how you feel, tell him too how much you love him and appreciate how supporting he is too :)
eeeeeeek what a stick position, i am sure somebody else will make some other comments........between us all i'm sure you can pick and choose some bits to say to your dad.......as for his gf? mmmmmm i'd not talk to her for a bit......might be best :p

Deep breath! :)

Yes, it can be hurtful when other people don't see the delightful personalities and cuddly characteristics that we see in our pets, and some people are blessed/cursed with the diplomacy of a sledgehammer.

I remember OH's mother coming to visit and falling about laughing at my two guineapigs (a pair of very cute abys) because 'they are so ugly'.

If someone has that kind of a response to my pets I just smile, change the subject to something else while making a mental note that I'm not going to have much in common with this person, and therefore we won't be spending much time together in the future!

Try not to take it personally, just feel sorry for them that they lack the social skills to act politely in such a situation.

*inhales and counts to 10*

Thanks Glynis, my dad will be alright, he was trying to change the subject to shut her up but it was no use, she was determined to tell me how ugly my guinea pigs are! I wouldn't mind if she said she doesn't like guinea pigs in general (I know not everyone sees piggies the way we do) but singling one out as the ugliest thing she'd ever seen....while pointing at hosters sweet little face I might add......is just, well, mean.

You wouldn't say it about someones dog, why say it about a gp? And you're right Banana, it is a lack of social skills, she's one of those people who say things like 'I speak as I find', which to me translates as 'I'm rude and have no friends'.
Grrrrrrrrr..........

It must have been very awkward for your dad, too - poor man!

I can live with the fact that some people don't like my piggies very much (like my own mother-in-law, who drove me nuts with the "mess" they were making - never mind I always hoover the house before we leave!), but that woman lacks basic social skills!

BIG HUG - it's not easy to keep your temper in situations like that!

I feel really lucky that both my family and my partners family love my piggies

I agree poor daddy!

That tickled me sorry, but yes you did very well not to have lumped her one, I don't think I would be able to stop myself from hurling her out the window :))

In all seriousness though, what she said was just plain cruel, we've said this before that you dont go around telling people their children are ugly so why say that about our pets which for many of us are like our babies anyway? I feel for your dad who was obviously stuck in the middle but hopefully he gave her a telling off when they left.

I know how you feel, once I was out walking my Staff and as we went around the corner an old man and his dog appeared, my dog wanted to play so he was bouncing about happy as anything while his dog was growling and snarling at my baby, and the old man had the cheek to tell me my dog was dangerous and out of control! Things like that leave me fuming for ages, you just have to not take it personaly, some people are just ignorant like that. Dont listen to her, all piggies are beautiful, just a shame some people arnt as lovely on the inside x

Wow I think you did well! What an awful woman to say something so mean to you about one of your pets! No matter what the pet its out of order and I'm pleased you and your dad didn't fall out.

Yeesh some people are just so rude! Go learn some social skills lovely! (her of course!)

OMG! I can't believe that. Has she got a sight problem?! >.< Oooo, someone once said that my Ruby had devil eyes, so I slapped her. HMPH! I was so mad! How DARE anyone say that any other living thing is ugly? Especially a little guinea pig... She has no class, no style! Every rodent is beautiful, though guinea pigs aren't really rodents as such. oooooo! I'm angry at her too now!

I'm sorry Ree, but what you said to her has really made me chuckle! What a horrid woman though, all piggies are beautiful. She should have gone to Specsavers!

I would have told her to get out to.My uncle calls them rats but he is only playing with me when he does.I haven't had a bad encounter yet.And hope I don't because I am going to go off on them.lol I know my uncle is only joking with me when he calls them rats so he don't make me mad any more but at first I got mad at him too.but I don't any more.

Oh dear. I think I would have reacted the same. I have an Aunt who doesnt like my Montgomery. She calls him rat boy and says that he gives her the creeps as he looks too much like a rat! She doesnt like Mimsi much either and says that his red eyes are straight out of a horror film. Its so hard to hear comments like this when we all see every guinea pig as beautiful and unique. Comments like this just make me love my piggies more. Montgomery may not be the most striking of piggies, but what he lacks in looks he more than makes up for in personality!

i feel for you,
it gets very upsetting when people say things like this
the first things i say are
they are a helpless animal that does not have to be sorry because you dont think they are cute
you are in my house so respect my pets and then i tell them to get out,
it will happen a few times in future as most people cant understand how piggies are so obsessive xxxxxxxxxx

My sister used to say she hated animals with red eyes, she said "it is not normal!", but as soon as she met my Ruby (lilac and golden, red eyed ridgeback, with a gorgeous aura, she loves cuddles and is just scrummy at cuddle time!), she changed her mind. She said "she's so unusual and beautiful colouring!", but she still doesn't like piggies, she thinks animals smaller than a cat are pointless! And to think we were brought up the same! I adore little animals, she thinks they're boring!

I so wish I had thought of saying something as eloquent as this at the time! Where were you when I was frog marching her by the scruff of her neck out of my house?! :(|)
Stargrrlclaire my sister doesn't like them either, more specifically she doesn't like their claws and teeth but she's definitely warming to them now she can see what individual personalities they have. I'm quite proud of that for some reason, I don't know why!

Thanks for the support guys, I felt really embarrassed about my reaction after I'd calmed down but your replies (and my husband saying he would have done the same thing) has made me feel a bit better. I'll apologise to my dad for putting him in an awkward position and I'll speak to his girlfriend at the weekend, I might say exactly what kingboris said thinking about it.
x

Probably not the case in this instance, but some people do have a genuine fear of small furries. When people are scared they act out of character and may say and do hurtful things that in a non-fear-based situation they would never do.

I'm not saying this is the case for you Ree as it does sound as though she was just rude and thoughtless, but it is worth bearing in mind when you encounter behaviour like this that some people just can't help themselves :)

I suspect people who keep pet spiders are much more familiar with this kind of behaviour and have to cultivate a more thick skinned attitude to people insulting their pets :))
