Senior Guinea Pig
A phone call to the rescue a few days ago was about a neutered male and his wife, 3 1/2 yrs old and needing to come in as the owner is pregnant and not able to cope with the pigs. rolleyes
"I need your assurance they will not be split up, and that they are rehomed to a loving home etc..., otherwise I'd rather keep them and rehome them to a family myself"
After reassuring her that I never split a bonded pair and look after the rescues just the same as my own she decided that I was good enough for her pigs. She did say that the male was long haired and needed a trim as he has some tangles - I asked that he not be trimmed as I prefer the pigs that come in to be in the raw so I know what I am dealing with.
Well in they come - and yes indeed he was in need of a trim, sadly he was too ill for me to be able to do it, he was dreadfully overheated after being in a carrier stuffed out with hay and placed in a hot car half an hour before they left. His breathing was very noisy and laboured and it was 6 hours in a cool room before his breathing had stablised enough to be able to have a good look at him, let alone trim his urine soaked matting.
His bottom - how he escaped flystrike is beyond me as they were outdoor pigs.
A vet trip later and he is on Septrin for URI and after 2 doses is already responding and improving. No sign of maggots thankfully but he does have some urine scalding. Once he has recovered more from the chest infection I'll be able to bath him - pet wipes for the time being to clean him up a little.
His name was Neo but as I feel this poor boy needs a fresh start where he is shown some respect I am calling him Mr Anderson. The females name was Magic - I've yet to come up with her name as she is so very shy I haven't got to know her much yet.
So thanks to the forum's generosity this little man's vets bills are covered. xoxo
Mr Anderson is very glad to be here (well he will be once he's got over the URI and had his bath). I'll keep you all updated as usual.
