Hello, my lovely boar, Elliot, has fungal on his nose :( It's quite an outbreak but my other boy, Oscar had it a few weeks ago but it's eventually cleared up and his fur has returned. He was staying at my mums for a few weeks and she used canestan anti-fungal cream once daily, but now Elliot has it.

Now we're back home I have a cage extension I can use to separate Elliot to stop the fungal going back and forth between each boy (I have a trio).

They would still be able to see each other, just not be able to touch or use each other's toys and bowls to stop any infection spreading. Is it a good idea to seperate Elliot from the others?

Elliot is the boss pig, will seperating the boys cause unrest in the pack? Will they accept him back with no qualms once he can return in the main cage?

Thanks for your help.

Hi there and well, done clearing up a funge, infection on the nose, they are very difficult to control .

In answer to you're question , personaly I would put a devied in the cage so they can get to know each other again.

It may work putting him strate back to gether, but Elliott has been through a lot , illness can take it out of them and
he may not be fully back on form , and a little unsure of him self

Hello Gizzy,

Thanks for your reply :)

I will do a gradual return like you advise. My boys have been friends for such a long time I would hate to jeopardise their friendship. They're all fairly laid back apart from Elliot, he's a bit of a control freak ha ha but even so I am sure the other two will miss his company in the cage a lot. Thanks again for your reply.

When you finally put them all back together follow the boar bonding guide on here and bond them on neutral territory. Ideally separating for fungal needs to be in a separate air space (like you did originally) so it would have been possible to keep them together if they are in the same room as they have already been exposed to the spores, though I appreciate that is now not possible until they are rebonded. Is it a nose strip you are dealing with or something more serious like Ringworm?

Hiya Helen thanks for your advice.

It's ringworm. Should I bathe the wound with water or anything else before I put the canestan cream on daily? Is canestan the best thing to use or is there a better cream out there? Canestan was what I used on Oscar who it has cleared up on.

Glad it's cleared up in my Oscar, but for it to happen to my Elliot is devastating. It breaks my poor heart to see my little one not in perfect health.

Canesten isn't ideal no as it doesn't treat the whole pig. Here is our Ringworm guide in which we recommend either Imaverol dips or Itrafungol which is an oral medication. If you only treat the affected area the pig can easily ingest the fungal spores and so the infection is continually spread about. Also, when they eat their special poos they are continually reinfecting themselves. The guide also covers the essential hygiene measures that are needed.

Was the Ringworm diagnosed by the vet?
