I've just bought a new (male) Guinea pig from a Pets at Home store and my sister bought one two (male again). My sister's Guinea pig has fungal disease which is contagious for humans as well (called ringworm) and my Guinea pig and both Guinea pigs have to take pills for 21 days. My Bam Bam is only 17 weeks and I'm a new pet owner. Apparently the disease is common but I'm still worried. Google says they have to be confined and handled with protective clothing! My Guinea pigs live in my room. What do I do? Where do I put them? Help!

Firstly have you been to the vet regarding the pigs, to get the suitable treatment? Avoid handling the pigs with bare hands, if you do, it may be an idea to wear rubber gloves. The pigs will be fine to live in your room providing you wash hands after touching the cage etc. I hope the fungal clears up soon :)

Edit- whoops I can now see you have already got the pigs treatment.

Thank you, that really helps. I was so worried.

Here is our detailed guide on what to do when you are dealing with a fungal infection. Please be aware that you have to treat all three guinea pigs if they have been together at the shop in order to prevent the other coming down with it, too. The infection takes 10-14 days before it becomes visible.

What are your plans with your single boy for the long term? Guinea pigs are not wired to live on their own. But that is something you may need to think of only after you have sorted the fungal!

I think the OP just has the two male guinea pigs on reading the first line of the post again

Have a read of the thread the Wiebke has linked to above.

Would recommend wearing disposable gloves when handling bedding and them. it will clear up in no time but just practice good hygiene to minimise transmission.

Yes I have two, pets at home has paid for the treatment. The Guinea pig that has visible signs of the disease has scabs and spot on his nose but nothing else so far.

Good, you have caught it early. The sooner you can start treating, the better. Please be aware that ringwowm and other fungal needs to run its due course, so things are going to get worse for around a week before they get better. The pictures in the ringworm link I have given you are showing you the different stages. The link also tells you in detail how to handle the infection and the necessary hygiene, so you can get over it as quickly as possible. It is very important to be serious about the latter.
