So i had previously posted a thread a while back for a fungal infection on my other guinea pig Echo. His cleared up and i then got Darwin the skinny pig. He has quite a large sized white patch on his head and eye area along with spots of it on his back.
I had brought him to the vet on Wednesday last week and they were both treated with Xeno drops and i was told to give high amounts of vit C (Ace-High Powder) in their food. However nothing seems to be working and it just seems to be progressively getting worse. Do i need to be careful of anything considering he is a skinny pig or is it going to be just a waiting game for it to die out like on a normal guinea pig.

Also i was told by a person who breeds guinea pigs and rabbits that Scholl foot powder can be used on them but i am hesitant due to it being a human product and not an animal one. Any suggestions of anything else i could use on them which is safe for guineas. Thanks

Sorry to hear this. Can you post a photo?

Xeno drops are for Mites rather than Fungal

have a read of the ringworm thread here Ringworm: Hygiene And Pictures

I would suggest ringing around vets until you find one who has experience with guinea pigs.

Taken from the thread above quoted
Oral systemic fungal treatment with itrafungol(UK) / sporonox(US) (i.e. itraconazole) is now increasingly more widely prescribed by vets. It has the advantage of being much less stressful for the guinea pig and is keeping handling to a minimum for you. It also gets to all places, especially in very sensitive areas. In our experience it is very effective.
It is prescription-only and not cheap, but well worth it, especially when you have a number of guinea pigs or frailer ones.

For topical treatment, imaverol/enilconazole dip is in our own experience the most effective and the mildest when it comes to sensitive areas and skin, as well as very young guinea pigs.

Thanks for all the advise, the vet i took him to is a highly recommended exotic vet, i also bring my reptiles their and have no quams with them at all. I guess she was treating them for suspected mites and that is why the xeno drop were given.
I will deffo ask the vet tomorrow about the medications in which you have suggested. :)

I'm surprised that your vet didn't prescribe a cream or an oral medication for a pig with fungal. It is the only recognised way of treatment. I would never personally use a powder on any of my pigs. A photo of the problem would help a lot.

:agr: If the Xeno isn't working then I'd certainly ask your vet about treating for fungal.

Itrafungol is the best option whether skinny or hairy. I can see why the vet treated with Xeno as mites on a skinny can look like fungal but if it is getting worse then he needs fungal treatment. With Itrafungol it is an oral medication and so you don't need to worry about putting anything on his skin.

So i have an appointment made for Monday next week to get something out for the fungal but i am wondering if anyone has heard of Safe4? Which has a range of disinfectant, wipes, concentrated cleaners and says it is effected against bacteria, viruses and fungal?
Anyone hear of this brand...it also says that the wipes can be used for animals who have things such as ringworm....would this be effective of Darwin's case of ringworm?
