Fungal infection or mites and what to do :(

my guinea pig has what seems to be mites but also looks like a fungal infection i have had many opinions from different people and i am not sure what is right he has hair loss on his back with usual fungal infection symptoms but a scab has appeared on his eye which seems like a fungal infection could someone give me some advice on how to treat it, he was done for mites 1 week ago

Hi Simon, I'm not the best person to ask as I'm not very knowledgeable about mites owing to the fact ours haven't had them.

The best thing to do would be to do a search on the top right underneath the account settings - some old threads may be able to help you with your query. Failing that, a search on the internet may yield some results on other forums or webpages. Alternatively you could give your vets a ring - I'm not sure whether they will be open at this time, but you could always ask to speak to an emergency vet who may be able to advise.

I hope it gets sorted.
 
Thank You missybct I'm most probaly going to try to treat with with some cream 2-3 times a day a vet has told me on a another one of my pigs that treating for mites gets worse before it gets better so I'm going to treat the fungal as well as seeing what happens with the mite treatment to be on the safe side thank you for your help its much appreciated :)
 
Not sure that treating for both fungal and mites at the same time is the best plan - it makes it hard to work out what is working and what isnt. What mite treatment has your piggy had - ivermectin?
Also there are various fungal infections - some creams work on some better than others. I would say the best bet is to ask your vet to take a look - especially if the scabby eye is a new symptom.
If the vet decides it is fungal, it is also worth getting some F10 to clean out your housing to get rid of the fungal spores. Hope the piggy starts to mend soon.
 
Your piggie could do with seeing the vet again to get a 100% diagnosis of either mites or fungal as the treatment is different for both. Which town do you live in? So a cavy savvy vet may be recommended to you.

I understand how worried and frustrated you are, as our special needs girl has mites at the moment although it does look fungally too... We went to the emergency vets on Christmas day and she was treated for mites but the dandruff is still there and she hates her fur been touched by it, we are seeing are seeing our normal vet on wednesday to make sure the emergency vet was correct in her diagnosis and to see if theirs anything else we can do for her to get her better.

Hope your piggie gets well soon.

Hi everyone,

Don't mean to railroad this thread but Sport Billy I will be very interested to see what your vet says about your guineas. You replied I think or I replied about mites on a thread. I have had continual problem with mites. Vet is sure it isn't fungal as there is no scabs or hair loss in patches but I treat mine with Zeno 450 on boxing day and as predicted are still itching although ruby now isn't itching her ear. They like you have small bits of dandruff and Ruby's hair isn't laying flat where their body bends down to their bum, normally their hair curves with their body shape. I have had guinea with ringworm and I know they don't have that. How on earth does this cycle of mites get broken? I am positive I can feel Ruby's bone on her rump more than Titch who doesn't seem as bad. Is the only option ivomectin inked editions. Anyone?

Hi Silly,

I will let you know what Rosie says, unfortunately I'm very green and have little experience in skin conditions as until this year we'd neve had an issue, so am totally relying on our great vet when we see her with Meggy Moo on Wednesday. I will update Megan's thread with the advice given.. I know Mites can be treated orally, topicallly with drops or injections and varying types of fungal respond to different anti fungal creams and shampoos. From what I've read mites comes in cycles hence why the treatment is spaced out.

It may be worth starting a thread for your piggies so you can keep everything in one place, it helps as more experienced members find all the info they need about your piggie as opposed to digging around in various threads.
To start a new thread once in the Health and Illness section click on +Postnewthread button on top left of page, hope that helps.

I hope your piggies recover soon

very sorry about typing error ivomectin injections not what my iPad put. I got it for xmas from my hubbie and can't get the hang of it totally yet.

Hello I thought my pigs had mites because it started out as a circle on one of there behinds but it spread to the others face around the eye and badly around the nose from what I researched fungal infections (it might just be for ringworm) tend to happen around the area of the guinea pigs face mites then I'm more around the body. Not sure if this is right but this is how I found out it was ringworm and they were straight to the vet for oral treatment using Itrafungol for two weeks after the first week it seemed to not be working but then it suddenly went I then brought some super souffle cream off gorgeousguineas to help with the dry areas and they have nothing now I was also given 50ml of Imaverol which I heard guinea pigs can be dipped in but mine was used to clean the cage every 2-3 times a week. :) This is my experience anyway and it worked well they are doing much better only the occasional scratch but I'm still on the look out :) This cost me around £36 but this was also due to P@Hs fault so I was refunded the vet bill ¬.¬ Anyway hope this might help :)

Simon,

My guineas keep having what I presume is mites which progressed to ear infection. Ruby had itched her eye as obviously there is hair around the eye which may itch with mites, anyway she made it sore and scabby and had antibiotics for her eye and ear. Just a thought has he caught the eye with his nail like mine kept doing rather than ringworm?
