My year old Piggie Abby has recently come down with a fungal infection. I did some research and was told that Miconozol Nitrate cream was the best for her. I've been using it and am seeing a great improvement in her skin, but her eye is now very irritated and she feels limp and weak. Has anyone else had experience with fungal infections and can give me advice? :(

Its best to go and see your vet if you haven't already. They will be able to prescribe a medicine/cream that you know will work and won't affect your piggy. The fact that she is limp and weak is even more of a reason to see your vet asap.

Hi, yes I have some experience with fungal. Do you mean Daktarin cream?

First of all, would you be able to post some photos please of her skin and her eye. You need a photobucket account to post photos on the forum but it would help to be able to see photos of what you are dealing with. Also which country are you in?

I also recommend you see a vet but I may be able to help you with what you can discuss with them. If she is limp and weak she could be in pain.

Thank you I'll defiantly let my mom know that. My mom is reluctant to bring her in because she thinks we can help her without paying the extra money. Do you think part of her being limo is because she is depressed? I had to separate her from my other two pigs.

Is your vet aware you're using this cream? You should always consult your vet before trying to treat your piggy at home with human medication, no matter who told you it was okay.
The weak and limpness is certainly worrying, I think this requires a vet visit, and fast.

It could be part of it but it could be a pain response, a reaction to the cream, something else entirely or the result of the fungal. Please let your Mum know that as your parent it is her responsibility to get veterinary treatment for your pig. Are you in the US?

I'm having trouble uploading the photo. Can you do it on a mobile device?

Do you have a smart phone where you can get the Photobucket app? If not email me the photo at [email protected] and I can post it (this is not my main email address in case admin panic).

That looks either like fungal or a reaction to the cream itself. Where was the original problem?

I think she does need to see a vet. Miconazole is good for treating some forms of fungal but it is best to get a diagnosis from the vet first.

My mother has made an apt at the vet for today. I'm hoping there's nothing too serious wrong with her.

The original problem was her skin being white and her hair falling out, it was just a small affected area, but it spread very rapidly. Her eye was fine during this. My mom got the cream and since we've been applying it, her skin is much beter, but her eye looks very irritated and he feels limp.

That's brilliant. It should not be too serious, you only need to worry when it become systemic and starts affecting internal organs etc but that is way down the line and you have hopefully caught it early. I would recommend a product called Imaverol but I am not sure if it is called the same thing in the US but it is an antifungal dip that you use after an antifungal shampoo and leave it on. I would also not usually recommend using a cream as it can make the skin heat up and fungal thrives in warm conditions. See what the evt says though. They may also recommend an oral fungal medication, in the UK we use Itrafungol which is good. If you go on Guinea Lynx you may be able to get some american brand names though I do have an exotic animal formulary which is American so will have a quick look.

Ok both are called the same thing in the US. Itrafungol the active ingredient is Itraconazole and Imaverol the active ingredient is Enilconazole.

Glad to hear she is going to the vet; her eye doesn't look good at all. I had fungal issues with piglet on two different occasions. The first time the vet gave us an oral medication which seemed to heal it pretty well, but then he got a return case. Since we moved since the first vet visit, a different vet prescribed a cream to put on the spot (in piglet's case it was his ear). want to say it was called Animax? something to that affect, sorry it's been quite a while since he prescribed it, but it seemed to do the trick since it hasn't returned. make sure to disinfect her cage and all the accessories, and to throw out any wood or natural products because it's pretty much impossible to kill fungal in those products. good luck, and let us know how it goes at the vet.

Where on her body as the original infection? was it near her eye?

The limpness is worrying, I would ask the vet about pain relief too and to check her breathing etc. Has she lost any weight do you know? Is she eating and drinking ok and pooing?

The original infection was near her eye too. She has lost some weight and she hasn't been eating her hay. She drinks water though which is good. And I just have her some Cale and lettuce which she can't get enough so I think she's improving a little as far as her diet goes.

Ok, it looks like it has spread then.

Good she is eating a bit but if she does start to lose more weight then it will be necessary to step in with syringe feeding, have you done it before?

If the vet gives her pain relief this will help her appetite hopefully.

No I haven't done that before. But I'll do anything for my Piggie. Hopefully everything will be all good at the vet.

Ok, if she still is not eating properly when you have seen the vet, then post again and I can talk you through it. I will be online at midday UK time so could help them (my lunchbreak).
