I ordered from Gorgeous Guinea's skin care ( who Nutmeg reered me to) the CocoNeem melt, the 4 oils conditioning shampoo and Neem shampoo. They arrived next day (very impressive:) ) and look and smelt lovely. I started to apply the coconeem melt to Perky (the piggy I think has a fungly type thing) and it was fine to start with, well she bit me twice because I touched a sore part of her skin.
After about 15 minutes she started shrieking and scratched her side hard then started nibbling. She then went really stiff and wouldn't move. I rolled her over on her back and she just stayed in the same position. Ths really scared me and though I was going to be writing this in the Rainbow bridge part on the forum (I was nearly crying!)8...8...8...:0 She then went limp and slowly after about 5 minutes she came round and started squeking and nibbling her apple. I bathed her and used the shampoo and dried her.
She's now currently sat next to me eating her veggies watching me. I'm ringing the vets first thing tomorrow as it is too late now. I will also try and arrange an apointment to get Patch (my boar) to be neutered. I'm also going to email Gorgeous Guineas and ask her for help.
Does anyone know why this happened, was it a fit? Why did she go stiff?:(:...:...
Any help is very greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Did she have any lesions on her body, prior to applying the treatment? Did you also do a patch test, as recommended?

Do phone Chrissie at Gorgeous Guineas in the morning, she does need to know about this and she'll want to know your guinea's ok.

Seizures can occur with pigs severely affected by fungal or parasitic conditions, the fact that your guinea scratched aggressively and then went stiff suggests that led to it, but she may well have had a reaction to the Melt.

She started 'fitting or having the seizures' before I washed her. I had applied the melt exactley as the sheet said and was gentle with her.

Definitely contact Chrissie and ask her advice. Is your piggy acting now as if there has been an allergic reaction, or returned to normal? x

I would phone a 24 hours vet asap to get their opinion if not an appointment. You could also try and ring Vedra at CCT she tends to be up late.

Hope your piggy has a swift recovery!

Thanks everyone, she's fine in front of fireplace muching on veggies!
Her skin has turned a normal healthy pink (it was red before bathing)
She seems fine, definately going to vets tomorow
Did you get my pm Nutmeg as it's not been working

Yes, got your pm and came straight to the link, sorry was in the bath!
As Laura says, your piggy's condition could have led to the seizure. As it happened before bathing, it wouldn't have been the bathing or shampoo itself. Glad your piggy is eating and back to normal. Keep us informed. x

Just caught up on this thread and I'm glad to see Perky's perked up a bit...
Give her a cuddle for us (that Finlay and Frankkie, my 2 big boys and me)

Thanks everyone! Before I shampooed and batched her I used the coconeem melt but that hasn't done anything like create a rash or seem to make her in any pain. She's back in with Her sister and poppy (she's snuggled back up!)

I did the same treatment with my piggy Boris,He was also having seizures from the fungal infection and when ever i did anything stressful like take him to the vets or any of his medical routine including bathing he would have a seizure,is it possible your piggy was stressed?
I'm glad all is well, and i would also be sure to do the fungal treatment on her cagemates because they will most certainly catch it too its just a matter of when and if you treat them now it will help keep it away;)

good point about treating cagemates!

thanks,

its either treat the cagemates or seperate until she is fully recovered,i usually continue fungal treatment at least a week after it looks better;)

It may be best to keep them together,my Boris didnt get a friend before he fell ill and he pined for piggy company:(
On the other hand when Cooper got fungal i did seperate for a bit but due to Cooper getting worse i put him back in with Windsor and his spirits brightened and he eventually got better it just met treating windsor too;)

A fit/seizure is very common in pigs with fungal problems.
Just a couple of things to keep in mind. Do not handle the pig whilst it is fitting. You will only prolong the fit. At all costs keep your fingers away from the pig's mouth.
A bite from a pig in that condition can be very severe. The fit causes the muscles to go into spasm and the pig will not let go until the fit has stopped.
I am quoting from experience not from a textbook!
Should that be "hands on" or "fingers in" experience!?

Just got up and seen to her, she's eating normally (she's snuggled up in the hay with her sister) Her is a nice pink (it was red before I used the cream and shampoo). Perky has had a fungal infection before and we took her to the vets and she had antibiotics and a course of spot on flea treatment. We had pinky whit her but seperated perky off because we thought pinky might be bullying her because she was ill. The funny thing is pinky is perfectly healthy and has never had any problems at all ( we took her to vets at the same time as well). Pinky also got the spot on flea treatment but she's never been a problem.
I know how much a piggy nibble hurts alcesterpigs. When Perky had a fungle infection before she wasn't keen on being handled and I accidently touch under her belly on a part she bitten the scab off, she decided she didn't like me and told me what she thought of me with her teeth!
Going out today and I'm going to get more of the wag guinea pig crunch (a 2kg bag has been nearly all eaten by my four hungry little piggies in two weeks) are you meant to top the bowl up when it's a little not full (perfect english my writing is)
Thanks everyone

So glad your little one is doing ok this morning. Seizures can be very scary. If you are feeding Meusli type food, try not to be tempted to keep topping up as they will eat the bits they like best, first, then nibble on the rest throughout the day. If you keep topping up they will only eat their faves, and not benefit from nutrients in the other bits. However, quite a few of mine are fed on this type of food, and there are certain bits in it, that they will just not eat. I empty the dish every morning of whats left, and give a new bowlful, then I will top up just once in the evening. xx

might be down to stress the seizure at least eating & skin a normal colour
my jake had a problem with a fungal infection i had to bath him eveytime i cleaned him out & did the mite treatment took about a month to clear up & fingers crossed he's had no little scabs or itching since his cage mate got the same treatment as was worried it could spead which meant i was not popular for that month

i check their bowls in the morning (as at work all day) i'd say with me if there's about 1/4 left i fill it up can't let them hungry

I'm currently feeding them wag guinea pig crunch, they love it and when I go into the cage a pick up their bowl they start wheeking like mad (it's like music to my ears!) Once it's filled up they'll come scurrying over and start munching away at it, I love watching piggies eat ( I'm proberbably a bit * cuckoo*)
She still seems fine and is eating well, caught her today napping in the guinea tent I got for christmas whith Poppy, they looked so lovely and compfy Together.
Do these cavy cosies look OK? They seem very cheap

They look ok, better to have a reference from someone using them though! If I'm not mistaken, that eBay member is also on here...not sure but the username seems familiar.

Shes's gone.

I took her to the vets and the vet said that she had something from with her inside, probably her bowls as her leavings were are not formed and just in a pile, nearly diarrhoea. Put her on the vets table and she just wobbled around and fell onto my hands and squeked a little, she was very weak and it seemed to have happened overnight. She layed on my hand at the vets and I just stood there for about 10 minutes stroking her and crying. The vet said there wasn't much she could do and said it would be fairer to let her go to sleep.
So she's gone ...........
