With My Piggies :)
Hi guys,

Ive just noticed a small patch (about the size of a penny) on the back end of one of my young boars (he's only about 5-6wks old). After looking at some pictures of fungal infections, i'm pretty sure that's what he's got - only problem is because he's so young -= how would i go about treating it?

Many thanks for any help/advice you can provide

yes, looks fungal.
suggest speak to vet, or maybe someone like LauraCCC4 will be on soon

don't forget to move them away from homer and JJ, and to wash your hands thoroughly after touching them - but you knew that anyway :red

I agree that it does look fungal, very dry flaky looking skin.

Bathing would be the norm for fungal piggies, but with youngsters an anti-fungal cream applied to the fungal patches can be used. It may not clear it up entirely but it may help to control it until they are old enough to be bathed.

Daktarin cream or Daktarin Gold cream are both suitable, just a small amount applied 2-3 times daily. :)

Hi Boozyfruits - it never rains but it pours eh?

Ive contacted my local vets practice - but they can't fit me in until Monday afternoon.

This problem was only noticed today and definitely has only appeared in the last 24-48hrs - unfortunately he's in a cage with his un-related brother. As they are both so small and because i had to take them in as a matter of urgency, they cannot go in my C&C so at the moment Homer is in the C&C along with JJ (JJ is in a separate cage within the C&C - they two can still see/small one another) - these two boys are then sat in their cage next to the C&C (although there are mesh panels separating them - so they can see - but cannot touch) - JJ's cage is probably about 3ft away from them and she cannot see them.

Unfortunately i dont have another cage as my 4 piggies are currently split between 3 at the moment (one big C&C and two ferplast 100 cages)

Any advice on what i can do in the meantime is greatly appreciated

Hi all,

I treated the area as advised with Daktarin cream - i applied a small amount late last night and then again this morning. When i checked him at around 11:30 - and what was a patch of white dry skin - was now an open wound (looked very sore) i ran my local vets who didn't have any appointments until late tomorrow evening - so decided to ring my local PDSA. They fir me in within a couple of hours and after returning and looking at the bottle of solution they've given me i just wanted to check my next course of action is the correct one.

They checked him for mites and gave him some precautionary treatment for them, they dispensed a bottle of 50 x Chlorhex Scrub 5ltr and said i had to dilute it and apply to the wound twice a day - they've not told me how to dilute the solution (i.e 50/50 etc) and from reading about it online - it's basically an antibacterial solution used for cleaning minor wounds.

As i know nothing about fungal infections - is the open wound part of the healing process? Should i use what the vet gave me as opposed to the daktarin cream?

They mentioned ringworm, and asked me to give them a call on monday for the results of the test they did - does this all sound normal? Sorry for being so thick - i just want to make sure i'm doing the right thing by my baby boy.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice

The open wound is probably caused by him scratching himself.

When my boy had a fungal infection I used Gorgeous Guineas lavendar and myrh lotion, it might be worth contacting Chrisie as I am not sure if you can use it on young pigs.

Not sure that an anti bacterial wash would help fungal infection.

Remember to wash your hands after touching him.

Not much help I know

Good luck with him

i agree the wound may have opened fromn scratching it.
i would suggest Pm'ing Laura CCC4 for advice, or even ringing CCT if you feel vet/pdsa not helping.
not being able to get an appt at vets for a week is abit bad - maybe consider moving vets?
sorry to not be more help (and for not checking back on thread sooner)

The chlorhexidine scrub can be used on guineas, and the alternative of Povidone Iodine can be diluted and used as a shampoo - but I must agree that it's not the norm for a fairly mild fungal problem and I wouldn't use it on a small pig.

I know it is confusing when the advice given here contradicts what the vet told you, so it is up to you which you try. Do you feel the Daktarin has gone any way yet to helping the fungal patch to heal? Do you feel comfortable applying the Chlorhex solution? At the end of the day, you can do both - gently cleanse with the Chlorhex and then apply the Daktarin afterwards.

Hi,
I went to the vets again today and was given a bottle of Surolan. When i collected the Chlorhex i was told i needed some ear drops - so i naturally presumed (being a bit thick) that he needed the drops for his ears. It was only when collecting them that the penny dropped and i realised this was for his fungal infection.

I also went out today and spent £13.00 on a bottle of Nizoral and some bepanthen. I think i'm going to try what the vets has prescribed (and double check the meds with another vets i have him booked into this evening) and give it 3 days - if no change or it appears not to be getting better i will follow the advice of Nizorol shampoo with bepanthen then Daktarin cream after the course of Nizorol is completed.

All i want is for my little boy to get better.

Just out of inetrest - do i use the Nizoral on his cage mate as a precautionary measure? Or just keep an eye on him and treat if i notice any hair loss.

I checked his cage mate last night and i cannot see anything un-toward - is the fungal infection very contagious? and will he be sure to catch it? I would have thought that 3 days in he would have caught it by now?

Once again, thanks for all the advice you have given, it's provided me with a lot of ammunition to help get my little boy better.

Sometimes they spread, sometimes they don't - not a useful answer I know! It's up to you if you bath his friend in Nizoral as well or not. FUngal infections are common at this time of year, so if it was me I'd be inclined to bath both pigs, but as his friend seems to be fine it isn't essential.

I am surprised that the Surolan has been prescribed for a young piggie, although I guess with the 'dose' being low it may be safe as well as effective. Do let us know how you get on with the treatment. :)

Hi Laura :)

The vets were very specific in their dosage: 1 drop on the affected area with me distracting him for 10mins to ensure it's absorbed fully in case he licks it off.

Ive given him 1 dose of Surolan this evening and will see how it looks on saturday evening, if i don't think it's improving then i will bathe both piggies in the Nizoral shampoo and will treat the wound with the bepanthen as you suggested.

Thanks again for the advice - will let you know how i get on.
