My two boys Billy and Bobby had "mites" or so the vet said. I was just grooming them and noticed white, scruffy skin on their ears - I'm starting to think it's a fungal infection now!

Is it easily treatable? I'm going to the vets tomorrow :-(
Thank you

Hi

A mild fungal infection can be sorted with an anti fungal shampoo

Nizoral for humans is quite good although I always use Sporal_D for horses as it does a good quick job.

Vet-Sect Repel is another one I sometimes use as it does both Mites and fungal, although if possible its better to use a more specific shampoo like those listed above for fungal and something like flea or die for mites

This time of year it is good practice to use an anti fungal shampoo every 4 weeks and if they have mites as well you have to use an anti mite shampoo every 7 days for 3 shampoos to break the breading cycle.

My vet diagnosed Malaseb shampoo for my pig on Monday.

She's now had 2 washes in it :<> and it's beginning to clear up nicely.

Be warned, piggie will lose a lot of hair and you'll see a bigger bald patch :o - but that's just because the shampoo is dislodging the fungal bits. You should be able to see an improvement straight away, but treatment takes a few weeks - 2 weeks of shampooing every 3 days then 2/3 weeks of a weekly bath...inbreeding

Hope all goes well for you and yours!

Thanks guys!

Just out of curiosity did you pigs get it on their ears? Mine have a couple of flakey spots on theirs, the rest are on their backs. Think i'm going to have to give one of my guineas a fur trim!

Thanks again

Sammy

Hi

Its sometimes better to remove the fungal infected hair by the roots.

That not as bad as it sounds, you just run warm water over the infected area and give the hair a little tug, any with fungus in the root will just pull out, you may end up with a big bald patch but its better than letting the fungus go internal into the blood.

When one of my girls had fungal, she developed a few flakey spots on her ears as well as a couple of scabs on her body. I used Daktarin Gold (which was also recommended by my own vet), it is a human anti fungal cream brought from most pharmacies and it cleared up with in 2 weeks :) I used a blob of cream on the scabs and her ears twice daily and it soon cleared up. I carried on using the cream for 7 days after the scabs were gone.
