Hi My two guineas have a fungal infection (percy and princess both boys )
They have been treated for 3 1/2 weeks now by the vet and still ongoing treatment but i dont think its working as when they scratch they get red/blood sores then after a day or 2 they get scabs on (which i think is good as it must be heeling ) then i think they must sratch again and pull the scab off or another one appears. i Have some coconeem melt and manuka & neem shampoo from gg do you think i should try bathing them to help further or leave alone till all scabs and sores have gone , i have been gentle brushing one of them to try and remove all of the scruffy bit at the bottom of the hair which he lets me do as i think when the hair grows back in it will be nice .
I spot clean there cage every day and also wash there bedding every 2 days so i know its not dirty they are also on fleece bedding from this last week as before i had them on shavings (which i read was not good ) i cant tell you what meds the vet has them on as i live in france so it will **** be different I think they are getting better as before they fitted guite alot and now they are not . I feel so sorry for them and sometimes just sit in there room and watch them (sad i know ) but all i want is for them to get batter and looking lovely again .
Thank you

I agree your piggies may well have Mites, So possibly treating with some Ivermectin if your vet hasnt already would be a good idea. Please could you post a picture? May be able to shed some light on whats up with them?

If your guineas do have a fungal infection sometimes this can be very hard to shift, so maybe a change in the treatment regeme will be a good start as it doesnt sound like it is working. To avoid spreading any fungal around (especially if you have other pets/piggies or children) then follow some of these steps:

- Wash all bedding (if you have fleece/snugs) in a wash over 60'c (ideally 100'c if you can)
- Disinfect the cage and any cage furniture with a fungacidal disinfectant. Good makes are F10 or Trigene. (these can be bought from vets or very goo pet shops)
- Throw any wooden chews/archways away (fungus loves to live in cracks in the wood)
- Be careful when handling, dont allow children to handle your piggies and either wear gloves or disinfect your hands before and after handling your piggies.

update and pics of fungal

Hello .Here is a few pics of percy the ginger one and princess the white one
Please dont think i treat them awful I'm just going out of my mind
Today they have no more new raw cuts so the old ones have a scab on , Percy (ginger)is my main concern as you can see he has all white scuff on his hair and body it is now traveling to his face so is loosing all ov the hair . Do you think i should bath them with what i said in my first post ?
I have taken away all ov the wooden toys and houses so thay only have a few plastic tubes
Here is the pics of them and there bed

how do i post a pic ?

That tutorial shows you how. No one will think you treat them badly, you may need to see a vet that is more knowledgeable about piggies though, not all vets are, even in the UK. If it is mange mites you need treatment quickly of the correct type & also I would dispose of all bedding, wooden hideys etc & thoroughly clean the plastic stuff in hot soapy water & dry thoroughly before replacing. A proper diagnosis is needed first.

Do they look anything like that pic in the link I posted earlier?

Hello

From your pics it does look to be more a mite problem than fungal - the fitting can also be caused by a mite infestation.

It would be wise to treat them for mites as they can often take hold when the immune system is low from dealing with another problem.

Ivermectin is readily available and far better than 'shop bought' products which are often too dilute to deal with a problem of this severity.
http://www.hyperdrug.co.uk/Easimec-Ivermectin-05-10ml/productinfo/IVE1/

The dosage is 1 drop per 500g.
250-500g = 1 drop.
500-1000g = 2 drops.
1000-1500g = 3 drops.

Apply the drops to the back of the neck, part the hair so it goes directly on the skin. Treat every 7 days for 3 treatments.

While you are waiting for the ivermectin to arrive bathe the pigs in an insecticidal shampoo to relieve the immediate symptoms [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Johnsons-Small-Animal-Insecticidal-Shampoo/dp/B00393LCDY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1339751896&sr=8-1"]Johnsons Small Animal Insecticidal Shampoo: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies[/ame].

Do not bath them again until 48hrs after their last treatment.

Suzy has given you fab advise there. I would follow what she says and i agree it looks very much like mite than fungal, although there is no reason why it couldnt be both.

Hope these guys start to feel better soon. It may be worth placing an old sock over them like a jumper to help prevent self traumatising.

Sending them lots of love!

Hi I think i will write that down and tell the vet on monday as that is when they go back if not ill get it myself .
Ive added more pic's ,i tryed to cover them but every time i looked in on them they had it over there heads excuse the mess on the floor as i was cleaning there old cage .Another thing is they dont fight but today as i was checking in princess was cleaning or pulling the scabs off percy . do you think i should separate them untill this heels ?

Should i bathe them now or wait ?
Thank you all for your replies :)

Hi,

I also think its mite infection but discuss it with you vet. You can also use an veterinary aloe vera spray that will help to settle down the skin (avoid the eyes) - this won't kill mites only ivomectin can do that but it will help them to feel a bit better! Hope this helps!

ps don't bath them as it could irritate the skin that is broken now. Because they are young only use a mite product recommended by your vet.

Just an update , the vet is happy that it seems to be getting better , They are still loosing hair but the white flakey stuff is going so hopefully i can see the end . I have to continue with this treatment till thurs then follow on with another for 5 days with something different also put on few drops today so ill keep you informed. :(|) oh also they are letting me stroke them under there chin and back so thats a even better sign
