Hi guys yes i need help again,
2 weeks ago i took a fungal pig from my a bad home in my town and drove a few hours away to the rescue to drop him off and i may not have cleaned my car well enough ,i was under the impression fungal infections took at least 7 days to incubate so if that is true then i dont know how cooper caught it.
Somehow poor Cooper has been in the wars and has a fungal infection as well as abscess,
now the issue is my piggies caught lice from the hay and i treated them less than two weeks ago(no lice anymore) but!
when i bathed them i used the same water for all 13,used three towels between them all also, and cooper was the second pig washed, now if I'm right he would have had the start of fungal and it would have been all through the water and towel that i touched all the pigs with.
Currently the others look ok but i suspect I'm looking at a possible 13 pigs with fungal.
I'm not sure how to go about it,i quaranteened Cooper and his mate windsor so i can treat them both but i cant quaranteen 13 pigs i dont have that many rooms in my house.
i also dont have that many spare cages as this is not someting i could have dreamed happening.
i need a complete guide on how i can even begin to get rid of this,i wont be seeking my vets help as she told me it wasnt fungal it was psoriasisrolleyes when it clearly is fungal.
So i need a treatment that can be used on cooper with a healing abscess too,i was thinking betadine?
ive just never experienced a possible outbreak this big!
i need as much help as i can get,the vet sent me home with malaseb to was cooper in but i have been told not to do that or bath him until the abscess is mostly healed,
help appreciated x

when a pig gets warn down I think they are prone to other infections such as fungal ones which is how he may have got it?

When I had fungal infections I got a spray from pets at home and prayed everyone twice a day and it cleared up pretty quickly - thank god :)

The second time when I had found here I used anti-fungal shampoos and bathed everyone which I understand may be a chore with 13 pigs! This again worked really well for me

Other people will have different suggestions and probably better ones as you have 13 pigs but I thought I would try to help a little :)

x

I'm sure the others could give detailed advice but when i suspected a fungal infection with my lot (6 ) i used an essential oils mix http://www.oginet.com/pgurney/skinp.htm
on all of them and that worked. I'm sure gorgeousguineas.com would have something. I tired the natural option first for ease but you can get topical creams too, i have Clotrimazole. You can add neem oil to combat the lice. I'm not sure what would be best for for poor cooper, other members can help better. poor cooper :( hope you get sorted soon

thanks heaps,
I do have alot of the GG range and the fungal treatments from that range too and i was going to use that on all my pigs but i have to figure out what Cooper can have that wont hurt his abscess,
I thought maybe there was a treatment that didnt require tons of applications or washes as there are so many to do and i have to clean all the cages and room out as well so its a huge job.
thanks for the link ninja xx

First of all don't panic, it's worse than it sounds and you WILL be able to get rid of it. I had it recently in 8 sows. Treat them all for mites (if you haven't already) so you know what you're dealing with. With my sows, I used Canestan cream (you can get this over the counter) on the open sores. I also got Nizoral shampoo (again from over the counter). When bathing in Nizoral, you need to really work this into the skin, particularly any flaky bits. Leave on for 5 minutes and then rinse really thoroughly. If any flaky skin or open sores remain after shampooing, coat this in Canestan cream. You can re-apply the cream every two days. It took me weeks to get rid of mine but I eventually did. You'll also need to scrub the cages very well with a strong disinfectant or even bleach, but again rinse thoroughly and leave to dry :)

One of mine had a fungal thing and i think I used daktarin on it and it cleared up pretty quickly. I had tried other stuff but as soon as I used that it got better.

Hi Bonnie,
Betadine will work if you dab it on the spots a few times a day, i have been told that you can aslo bath them in the stuff.lol you will just have a funny coloured pig.lol Also so canastine cream works.

When I had the last lot of foster boys they both had fungal and what I did was revolution first then malasab bath the betadine and for the had to get to spots like inside ears and around eyes I did the canastine cream, plus I used shredded paer as it was easier to clean the cage with out bits going every where.

And yes also is copper is already a bit run down then he will be more prone to get anything else, maybe up his vit c intake at the moment as well.

I was thinking betadine would be best,i used that for boris i bathed him and applied it and it did do a good job,its the only thing that coop can have safetly that i know of too.
As soon as the ivermect arrives i will be giving it to them so thats covered, and thanks for the tip re vit C i didnt think he would need that but it wouldnt hurt to give it to him;) x

Here are the pictures can you please tell me what you think it is as i think its fungal but i cant be sure and my vet is no good.

opinions on his skin are appreciated (OH seems to think hairs may have fallen out due to having all the gunk through it but i think it looks like fungal?)

I would agree that it is fungal. Do the pigs get to wear bright red nail varnish?
I am assuming that you are holding the pig and not your OH.

poor thing! Vit c is always good, especially when healing. Sam gets it every day. I'd go with a fungal infection too.

i had 8 guineas all with fungal infections and 1 with a abcess the vet gave me baytril 0.2ml twice a day and also put them on pro c biotics in there water.and she told me to bath him 2 times a week in nizoral shampoo and i used clotraminzol 1% twice a day on and bald patches and also put in on there ears i treated all that had any signs and them that had been in contact that didnt have any signs.after 2 wks there was a great diffrence the ones that did have it were now getting better and a the 1 with the abcess that had now gone and there was hair regrowth and the ones that didnt have any signs of it never developed it i did this for 4 wks to be safe and the one with the abcess was one baytril for 10 days this was a rescue and when he came in he was bleeding so bad from abcesses but now the furr has neally regrown..:)

also use virkon disanfectant to clean all cages each time you clean out and wear gloves aprons whe handling them you can get virkon from aguclutual shops sorry for spelling its about 1.49 a sachet and it goes ssoooo far wipe your apron down i used wipeabul aprons and disposabul gloves each time.

Thanks for the tips, although i have always been told by vets and piggy owners that nothing should be put in water as you cant guarantee that they are getting enough or the correct amount,
I will continue syringing vit c to cooper i find it easier;)

i have never heard of vircon,I'm in oz so chances are that its under a different name over here, ill check it out xx

How is Cooper? I've had success treating fungal with Povidone Iodine (Betadine) baths, if you've got enough then just mix a bit of Betadine with some normal shampoo and wash as normal, let it soak in for five minutes though. Personally I would feel most comfortable treating it this way, given he has some broken skin where the abscess is.

In terms of your initial concern, I think unless the other pigs start displaying symptoms I would not worry too much about trying to treat all 13. One of my girls, Saffron, has had a fungal infection since she was 3 weeks old, it seems to lie "dormant" for a while, apart from causing her sensitive skin, and then "flare up" every so often with an 'active' patch of fungal. In both situations she has remained with all her cagemates and she's been dried with the same towels as the others at bath time, and none of the others have been affected.

I think I'd just hold my breath for your other 12 boys until Cooper's cleared up! Good luck, do keep us updated. :)

hi guys,
coopy is on the mend his abscess looks good and his fungal is better too, well thanks for the advice Laura i will only contine to bathe coop and of course windsor as they are housed together as its been very hard and time consuming doing all of them especially since Ralphy is the only pig that doesnt try to scratch my hands openrolleyes

Glad to hear that coopy is on the mend =D
Hope everyone else is doing well and that you're making sure you have some time to yourself!
xxxxxxx
