Hello,

My wee Lily has a fungal infection :( We've only had her for 2 weeks and the vet that I went to had nothing in stock except an ointment, which I put on the affected bits.

The lady that I got our new piggie Milly from, had some spare Malaseb so I had my first attempt at bathing a piggie today. It went not too bad, except for the 20min wait. Lily must have been enjoying the rubbing in of the shampoo because when I stopped she would wheek away really loudly!

Could someone tell me how long the shampoo will take to clear up her infection? Her wee ears were looking much better from the ointment and the skin on her back around her wee sore patch was starting to look much calmer. I will bath her again at the end of this week but not sure how much more she will need?

It can take weeks to clear Fungal infections I'm afraid, so you may have a wait, but it always varies from one piggie to another. Malaseb may also not be effective, it is used to treat ringworm in cats often, but depending on the strain of fungus then it may or may not help. If infection doe not improve in the next week or two or in any way spreads then please go back to the vets for a different type of treatment. Fungal can be a pain to get rid of sometimes.

x.

Thanks for replying. These are our first piggies and this forum has been great already for advice :)

The person I got Lily pig from is paying for the vet but unfortunately the vet doesn't really have a clue about piggies. I do have another local vet though and have called and they seem to know what they are doing so I am going to take her in next week if Lily doesn't seem to be improving.

Although her ears are looking much better I'm not sure if that is because the cream is oily and masking the dry skin so I am keeping a close eye on her back to see if it gets any worse.

Maybe you could ask for a perscription for the malaseb and then use it along with the ointment. Is the ointment a seroid cream?

When my youngest sow had a fungal infection she was given a steroid injection, ivermectin and some Baytril along with one bath of malaseb and i think it cleared up after ten days!

The vet originally assumed it was mites and treated her with invermectrin last week and she has another dose of that to get on thurs but I don't think she considered it was anything else. I had a good look around this site when it started getting worse and took her back to the vet. Only then did she do scrapings and couldn't find any sign of mites or lice etc. She didn't seem to understand when I mentioned a fungal infection so I guess she's not used to treating piggies.

Thanks for the tips, I'll mention them to my vet when I see him this week :)

SharonS, the cream she gave me is an anti fungal, anti bacterial cream, supposed to be for dogs. She didn't fill me with confidence when she said she didn't see why it couldn't be used for a piggie but obviously there would be no comeback if something happened :(
