I'm having a bad time at the moment with the girls :(

River developed a fungal ear infection which was successfully treated with miconazole, or so I thought. All the hutches were thoroughly cleaned and disinfected but at the weekend I noticed that Ace also has the infection. I checked Amy as well and she is showing the first signs of it on her lip. All three are now being treated - River because the infection was obviously still lingering despite appearing to be gone, Ace because she's got it, and Amy to stop it getting worse.

Then I noticed that Elphie, one of my other girls, had a funny nose and on further inspection she has it, too! I don't know where they're picking it up from. Poor Elphie is probably suffering the most because it must be awfully painful on her nose, and today I was applying the treatment and a crusty lump of fur and skin came away, leaving a very sore and red looking patch of skin and an upset Elphie :( I soaked it with cold water.

I just hope I can stop Glinda, Freddie and Nelson from developing it too 8...

sorry if this has already crossed your mind...

...but...what are you doing to stop yourself spreading it between them, ie. on your hands/clothes/lap blankets/etc...

you also need to make sure that you disinfect the run as well if they're all using it. What are you using to disinfect? And what type of fungal is it?

I've been using water and special hand gel (I don't know the name but its really vile and stings my hands where the cat has scratched me) between handling. I pick them up in order of infection severity - boys first because they fine, then Amy, River and so on. New cotton buds and cotton wool are use each time, obviously, and I've been washing the cap I've been using to dip the buds into.

I've been using a combination of Johnson's Clean and Safe and a solution containing an insecticide (piggy safe, and used because I suspected mites). I've had a look at the bottle and I cant see any mention of Byotrol so I think that's where we're going wrong. I'll have to pick up another bottle when I go out. :{

Fleece bedding is also being changed and washed regularly, and the wood hut has been removed from the hutch.

alcohol gels? :)

you want something like Virkon to disinfect the hutches - it's a horse disinfectant, and is strong enough to get rid of any nasties you might have lurking in the wood, including fungal spores. You can get it from any local horse suppliers, or off the internet.

Is that safe for piggies? Amy likes to chew on the divider. I can ask my brother to get some of that, I think :)

if its around the nose and mouth you need daktarin gel from the pharmacy and need to apply it 3 times a day and 1 week after the fungal appears to have gone

if its on the body i find Malaseb shampoo from the vet works fantastic, i bath once a week for 3 treatments 4 if you needed x
