Hello everyone

Well the piggy room is in full use and has piggies, hamster and a rabbit in there.

Whilst doing the rounds I noticed what appears to be fungal around little teabags eye. Teabag is my dads pig so a new member of the troop.

I have booked a vets appointment for this afternoon for teabag. It's right round his eye.

I have never experienced fungal before ad I'm quite worried.

Obviously I'll see what the vet says but I have a few questions that I would like people experienced in fungal to give their opinion on.

Do I seperate him from his friend? He doesn't seem to have it but obviously he has been in contact with teabag.

They are both in the bottom if a three tier cage (which is blocked so it makes 3 seperate cages) do I put them both in a hospital cage and into a different room?

I'll obviously check over the other piggies.

What about the rabbit? Of course again I'll check him over. I guess it's just keeping an eye on them all.

Do I need to disinfect everything? I mean like all the other cages and all surrounding areas?

Sorry for all the questions but I've never experienced this. I knew I would experience this at some point.

Thank you all :)

I've had lots of piggies with fungal in the past and all got thought it fine so try not to worry too much.

I do believe it can be something to do with humidity so maybe the heating is too high in your piggy room. And I know hygiene is a must.

I'm sure someone will be along soon to answer all your questions.

Are you using a good disinfectant? If not, it's advisable to get one for cleaning while you have fungal (and after too potentially).

I always recommend F10 - it's a veterinary grade disinfectant, often sold in reptile shops as reptiles are prone to fungal outbreaks due to warm, humid conditions. I get mine from here http://www.reptiles.swelluk.com/manufacturers/f10-1150.html I get the concentrated one and dilute it as per the directions in a spray bottle. Lasts a while, and smells nice! You need a contact time of 30-45 mins for fungal with this disinfectant, as with most, so spraying it on and leaving it is the best way to use it.

Please separate the infected guinea pig asap to prevent others catching it.

Good hygiene and an antifungal disinfectant like F10 is essential; deep clean all your cages and piggy furniture. Please wash any fabrics (including your pullovers/apron etc. when treating) at a minmum of 60 C.
If it is confirmed as ringworm, it can spread to other mammals (including humans). I use disposable gloves and F10 hand gel.

An antifungal bath for all your piggies can help the others coming down with it (for ringworm, I have found imaverol dip very helpful). Ringworm takes about 10-14 days to come up; the fungal area will get worse at first as the affected hair around it comes out. Fungal usually sits on the hair and hair roots; that is why it is important to get everything affected out.
Give any infected piggy about 2 weeks quarantine at the end of the treatment to make sure that the fungal is not coming back.

Good that you have your dad's piggy seen asap!

So it is ringworm..

I'm setting up the quarantine cage now - The vet has told me I'm to treat him and his cage mate with the medication she has given us as he has been in close contact with him so both are going into the quarantine cage. How often should I change teabag and teddy's cage? They are done twice a week at the moment.

My vet said not to use anything else and just use the medication, should I still use an antifungal bath for him and his cage mate?

I'm going to do a full clean of all the cages and surrounding areas. They are never in contact with the other piggies so should I just keep an eye on them or should I give them all the antifungal dip?

My dad is also worrying about that if it's on our clothes and we didn't change straight away can it be transmitted to other fabric furniture? Teabag and Teddy were changed out 2 days ago and I dont think my mother changed her clothes straight away and my dad is worrying that it can get onto other fabrics from our clothes.

Also, would other animals like my Dog, Rabbit and Hamsters need to washed in an insecticide?

My dad is a worrier and wants to make sure we are doing everything right as we do not want it to spread.

I second all this. As Wiebke has had an outbreak or two in her tribe and found the above worked well. And my herd had an outbreak and was treated in the same way.

As with the other animals i would keep the dog, hamster and rabbit away from the piggies and keep a close eye on any signs in them before rushing into treatment. It is unlikely to transfer through clothes but it may be worth washing at over 60 degrees if you dont already. Try wearing gloves with effected piggies if your really worried about it all. Some strains of ringworm may not transfer to us, others may.

x.

Teabag & Teddy are up in the quarantine room :) both having the time of their life! Loving their medicine!

Everyone else looks to be fine :) but fingers crossed! I'm a clean freak anyway! X

Hello :)

Here is the two week update!

TeaBag and his brother Teddy both loved their medication! I just had to break it to them that the vet has said no more is needed and that they are to continue with the imaverol bath instead for the next 2 weeks.

TeaBag's crustyness around his eyes is just about gone and you can see his skin instead of the white. His cage mate is also clear :) all my other piggies are clear and neither me nor my mum became infected. The vet was very pleased with us! She asked if TeaBag had any discharge or runny poops and I said no! Apart from the crusty eye you wouldn't tell Teabag was poorly!

TeaBag was having a little zoomy in the box on the vets table so she was pleased he was still cheerful and himself!

The vet also was looking tea bag over and said that he is in such wonderful condition! My dad treats him like a little prince!

I've bought Teabag a bed and tunnel from Cavy Couture :) I will give it to him as soon as he is fully clear! As he is such a good piggy!

I'm really pleased :) I did get so stressed :)

I would like to thank all the above for all the helpful advice that you have given me :) it has really helped! And also thank you Suzy for answering my billion questions! I'm glad I discovered this forum!
