Guinea Pig Land!
Phoenix has been scratching alot and I've noticed his hair is starting to thin in places (bearing in mind he's an aby), the points of his rosettes look bigger and her has a few little scabs on his tummy.

I have Beaphars Spot on treatment. Should I treat him with that or should I go out and get a special shampoo or something?

Since nobodies answered I've treated him anyways. Bathed him (and his friend) in Nizoral shampoo and done spot on treatment followed by a lil dab of Daktarin cream for his lil scabs/flakes on his tummy.

I noticed once I'd applied the Spot on treatment that he was bleeding a little bit where I'd put it on. Hopefully it won't do him any harm. He's still scratching but isn't making a fuss when I pick him up as much now.

Will update this thread with his progress in case anybody else encounters this problems and wants advice.

Sorry that nobody had answerd, i personally havent felt the need to use "spot on" treatment, do you have your guineas wormed? All that come to me that are older than 4 months get wormed every 3 months. You can bath them in flea or die, for parasites (mites) or nizoral for fungal. If you are unsure of which it is, then bath in f/d the first day, leaving on for 10 minutes then rinsing. 1 day break then on the 2nd day nizoral then one day break. Do this for around 2 weeks if it still hasnt cleard up then a vet/rodentologist trip is the next step i would suggest

Cheers popcorn...As I said I bathed him in Nizoral 2 days ago and did the Spot on Treatment a few hours later and have been putting Daktarin cream on his bald patches and scabs.

This morning he seems to have lost more hair on his belly but the skin on his belly does look better so I don't know whether to take him to the vets or not.

Oh great! I was advised to do the Spot on treatment once he was dry. Gggrrr! Will have a look at the link, thanks Sophie.

Right thats it...I've booked him into the vets for 3.20pm and I'm just about to order some Manuka and Neem Shampoo and a CocoNeem melt from Gorgeous Guinea's. Can anybody at least give me some advice of what I SHOULDN'T let the vet do to treat him (IE inject him with something).

I'm just so bloody fed up now and I want to get him sorted! Sorry for the rant. I hate seeing him like this and he's obviously not feeling on top of the world as he's not as active as he usually is.

How did the visit go?

You could either do what popcorn paradise advised, or I usually advise this routine:

Day 1 - Anti-fungal bath
Day 3 - Ivermectin
Day 8 - Anti-fungal bath
Day 13 - Ivermectin
Day 15 - Anti-fungal bath
Day 23 - Ivermectin

This covers the usual guidelines of:

- No baths inside 48 hours of an Ivermectin dose.
- One week between anti-fungal baths (for non-severe infections).
- 10 days between Ivermectin doses.

The above routine has been used, by myself and many others, over the years and is both effective and safe.
I believe it was first used by the CCT.

The vet reckons its mites, but I'm keeping an open mind as my vets have been very wrong over so many things Guinea related in the past.

She said the Nizoral bath and Daktarin cream would be doing more harm than good if it was mites (not sure it thats right...{:|) and said I need to bath him EVERYDAY (!), and perscribed 0.2ml Baytril twice a day along with treating him with Xeno 200 in 7 days.

There's no way in hell I'm bathing him everyday the poor little thing. Luckily I have bought some Manuka & Neem shampoo and a CocoNeem Melt from Gorgeous Guinea's.

He seems fine, but was drinking a hell of a lot last night but isn't now, is eating really well and since being on the Baytril a couple of days, doesn't mind me picking him up as much. Bless his heart.

Will do the routine you suggested Laura thanks, not sure Whether to bath him today or wait until Tuesday (Nizoral bath was on Tuesday of this week).
